Colchester Zoo: Is there a little train there?

Anyone familiar with colchester zoo? It used to have a little railway - is it still there?
Dh would prefer to take ds to London zoo, but I've sold him on the little train ride... (and we can pop in and see some of my friends who live nearby.. hee hee ).
I've checked the zoo website but the train isn't mentioned, so does it exist or am I more demented than I suspected!

Yes there is a little train there. It's quite sweet as the driver tells you all about the animals you can seeon teh way round. However due to the cold weather, most of them are hard to spot. However Colchester Zoo is far far better tan London Zoo, because it is way bigger and has some great animals. A Baby elephant was born last weekend, and it is soooooooooo cute (about 3 foot high!) You have face painting, for a donation (or free if you are tight!) I usually give about 50p. There is an indoor ball park/slide as well as 3 or 4 outdoor playgrounds. At the moment there is a Santa Grotto which is wonderful, a real magaical experience for the younger ones. A present is included in the price of admission, if you have under 3's you can buy a special ticket (about £4.50) but the pressie is worth that. I could go on and on about the zoo as we go about once or twice a month, and my kids never get bored (they are 3 3/4 and 1 3/4. It takes all day to get round (and still miss loads). However you do need a buggy for the kids as there is lots of walking (and steep hills).

Please please go there rather than London Zoo it is well worth it. Are you planning to go B4 christmas? if so enjoy it

Crunchie I think you have just sold us a day at the zoo - perhaps you should be on commission! We were going to go to Legoland the weekend before Christmas, but this sounds lovely and have just checked out the website so off to book the tickets. Thanks!

Enjoy it, I hope your kids do too, we may bump into each other without even knowing as we migt go again on the Sunday! - as I said we go all the time

How about a mumsnet outing to Colchester Zoo in the Spring? I am about an hour away, haven't been for a couple of years but thoroughly enjoyed it when I took my nephew there.

Chinchilla · 12/12/2002 18:53

Can I come too? I live in Colchester. And yes, the zoo is great! Enjoy it.

Good idea, to have a mumsnet Zoo trip. I'll be there. Lets organise it in the new year though as there is a million things on at the mo, and I have no idea what I am doing after Dec 25th

Just to confirm that there is indeed a train at Colchester Zoo - it's the Lake Tanganyika road train. The website is being redeveloped and will include a search facility very soon which would have been helpful in this case. You can also buy zoo tickets online so you don't have to queue when you get there. I don't work for them btw!

Crunchie, just wanted to say, thank you for the recommendation. We went on the Sunday before Christmas and had a wonderful day out. The grotto was truly magical for a little one, and we thought the zoo was so well planned out for the animals. Baby elephant was gorgeous, and managed to see baby mere cats and zebra too. So second the recommendation for anyone else, will be going back in the summer.

Crunchie · 03/01/2003 20:11

Glad you enjoyed it we will definately be there, perhaps we could do a spring outing??? Anyone up for it??

Rhiannon · 03/01/2003 20:20

Went on London zoo website the other day, it's only open from 10-4 at the moment. Adult price £12 and over 3's £9, a bit steep I thought.

Chinchilla · 03/01/2003 21:28

I would be up for a spring meet up, if that's ok?
