DH and I have moved into a new home. Semi detached and neighbors are lovely. They invited me in for a tour as our property is totally reno job and they have done some work. Whilst there they commented that their outside needed some work and the previous owner had done a shoddy patch up job on the fence between our houses. On the deeds it’s their fence and from our side, only two panels are visible as we have hedging. Recently we have had scaffolding up and when they had left, I noticed that the single visible fence posts between our houses was damaged. I can’t be sure that it was the scaffolders but it may have been.
I text my neighbor and apologised and offered to get the post repaired. They’ve responded and said not to worry, they’d seen it first (our bins were in the way so we didn’t see it immediately) and they’ve already arranged someone to come and give a quote. I replied offering to contribute and they declined, saying that it was rubbish anyway and it’s prompted them to do something!
I feel incredibly guilty however, I was actually relieved because we are currently pouring all of our finances into our interior and the budget is stretched, just making our house livable!
Im now in a daily battle with my conscious! Would you ask again once they’ve had a quote? I certainly can’t go halves but I am willing to pay for damage. Or would you leave it and knock with wine, chocs, gift card?
Help. I don’t want to upset them or cause offence.
