AM thinking of getting her one for her 6th birthday. She is not into small world play and her sisters are getting her some books. So I was thinking a nintento ds. Do your childrne play iwht them? What games are simple for them to use?

Or am I crazy for buying this for a 6 year old (she is really after nail vanish but dh has said NO WAY)

My dd is seven and has enjoyed Cooking Mama, and is currently into Catz. Ds2 is only 4 and enjoys cooking mama too, so being able to read isn't really important for this one.

Nintendogs and sonic have been a big hit.

rosealbie · 02/04/2008 22:11

My ds had one for christmas. He is 6 and a half. He loves Big Brain Academy and Lego Star Wars.

rosealbie · 02/04/2008 22:11

Oh and Sonic

Ellbell · 02/04/2008 22:13

DD is just 6 and loves her Nintendogs. My parents got her the Charlotte's Web game for her birthday and, although it took her a while to get the hang of it, she now loves that.

If she hasn't asked for one, I would put it off for as long as possible.

Given the choice between a DS and some nail varnis, I would go for hte nail varnish every time!

seeker · 02/04/2008 22:16

Sorry, didn't finish. I think it's too big a present to give unless you know she really wants one.

cazzybabs · 02/04/2008 22:18

seeker - would you? Nail vanish over something terribly expensive that will be outdated in sixth months and probably dropped down the toilet.

But the thing is at 6 you have no concept about big or small presents. TBH I want to get her something she will actually play with and if I stand on one more bloody hamma bead....
She does want one, althogh I am sure she will not be gutted if she doesn't.

I would rather buy her a DS than nail vanish.

My DD had one at 5 and was fine with it. Her favourite is nintendogz and she has Hannah Montana and HSM too. She does play it for about 20 minutes max once or twice a week, its not like we no longer see her or anything. Go for it.

seeker · 02/04/2008 22:23

Why? Little girls LOVE nail varnish! I would rather mine had green nails than got that mindless look they get when they've been doing screed based stuff of any length of time.

roisin · 02/04/2008 22:24

I think most children love them, and there are lots of different games out there.
Having said that I wouldn't buy one for such a young child.

That may just because I - and my boys - have addictive personalities, and find it extremely difficult to turn the things off. DSs saved up their birthday/christmas/pocket money for about 6 months and bought one together when they were 8 and 10. Quite soon enough IMO.

Doobydoo · 02/04/2008 22:24

How about a Tamagotchi?

My dd (5) has one. She plays on it every now and then, but not regularly.

I'm happy with that.

Its great for when she's in the car - keeps her busy rather than arguing with her sister!!

Her favourite game is Cooking Mama and she also likes Nintendogs. She now wants Baby Pals and is buying this with her birthday money.

She got Ratatouille for her birthday and hates it.

bluenosesaint · 02/04/2008 22:27

She also loves nail varnish

cazzybabs · 02/04/2008 22:28

You see Rosin that is what I wonder...should I wait 2 or 3 years....

but we have lots of baord games, craft stuff etc. And I can't hlep feeling it would be nice for her to habve something to do which doesn't tax her too much (we don't have a TV) but that she can also play with friends.

Cazzy, my DD would still rather put make up on, play hama beads and do craft stuff than play on her DS lite. In her case certainly it hasn't turned her into a drone. Like bluenose's DD she uses it in the car, but it doesn't rule her life. I'm still glad we got it and so is she.

dd had one last Christmas, 6 last August - Disney Princess was popular for a while, Dolphin Island (although the animals die if not fed etc and park gets closed down so can be frustarting), now onto Super Mario and Brain Training. They have the most fun playing against each other.
