Just wondering as last night it struck me that even though I dont think I particularly buy brand name stuff..most of the things we have from deodarant to tinned spaghetti to toothpaste is some brand or other.

colgate/milk teeth, dove deodrant and soap, diet coke, heinz tins, pantene hair shampoo; rest is shop own brand.

Telly is Goodmans, freeview box is Sony, dvd/vcr is something else (not sure which)

Think that's about it

catsmother · 29/03/2008 13:57

For food & toiletries - as opposed to larger goods - it's probably about 50:50.

Looroll, kitchen roll, washing powder, bleach, bathroom cleaner, window cleaner etc - all shop's own. Ditto basics like flour, sugar, rice, pasta, spices, fuit juice, tinned tomatoes, bread, butter ..... I just don't see the point in buying branded sugar or flour as there's no difference in taste and a large difference in price.

Cappuccino · 29/03/2008 13:58

oh, er, 30 tonnes

what kind of a question is this?

LynetteScavo · 29/03/2008 14:00

Just about everything. Except the backed beans. They are Sainsburys

LessThanImpressed · 29/03/2008 14:02

Ah I love my beans with a bit of backing!

LessThanImpressed · 29/03/2008 14:03

Ditto catsmother though, approx half-and-half.

MerlinsBeard · 29/03/2008 14:20

Tetley teabags too at mo but they were on offer!

I'm sure we have lots of things with some brand or other.

iheartdusty · 29/03/2008 14:33

all the supermarkets are brands, though, aren't they, otherwise why would they advertise?

eg M&S have spent millions on getting that catch phrase and the sexy adverts into people's minds; Asda has the patting the pocket thing; they are all designed to make you feel good about that store and trust it, and hence get you into it.

I can hardly think of anything apart from clothes which is not branded. Lots of them I am oblivious to, eg I have no idea who made the paper in the photocopier, but in the business world it may be a hard-fought matter of name recognition.

LynetteScavo · 29/03/2008 15:04

Ooo, Fio, what has Xenia been saying now?

Nemoandthefishes · 29/03/2008 17:58

cappucino I just wondered it seemed every where I turned I was met by some brand name or other and am wondering how it infiltrated into our lives iykwim.

everything is a brand tho - even Tesco Value

it is aiming itself at customers with particular needs eg Tesco Finest for poncey tesco shoppers and Value beans for budget ones

MsHighwater · 03/04/2008 22:32

I will often avoid supermarket own brand stuff.

I read "Shopped" by Joanna Blythman which was her assessment of the power of supermarkets in the UK. Suffice to say she is not a fan.

Own brands are just some company's goods being sold with different packaging for a lower price. She told some shocking tales (assuming true, of course) of big supermarket treatment of suppliers.

onepieceoflollipop · 03/04/2008 22:34

Any of the brands I have are generally random - e.g. if Andrex is on offer it is probably cheaper than supermarket so we get that. We are not loyal to particular brands. I boycott one or 2 but won't start a tangent on that.

SmugColditz · 03/04/2008 22:35

Sensidyne toothpaste.

Tresemme hair stuf (v thick hair, V big bottles, often on 2 for 1 and it's decent)

Catsan cat litter

Rightguard deodorant.

Surf wash liquid.

Rocks organic squash ...

I think that's about it!

Rosbo · 03/04/2008 22:43
