Advice please regarding inport tax if buying from USA

I want to buy some fabric from the USA and I know that you can get stung for import tax if over a certain amount.

Does anybody know how much you can order before tax, does this include p&p?

Help don't want to get a huge tax bill for a relatively small amount of fabric! My order comes to $51.91 (US dollars)

What happens is that VAT is charged on the goods at the rate it would be charge in the UK (so 17.5% for material) then duty is charged on top of this VAT inclusive value at the percentage rate set for that item
(I don't know what this rate is, but if you call 01702 366077 they can give you a 10 digit number called a commodity code (this should go on properly declared parcels and is unique to every thing/product) and then 0845 010 9000 can give you the rate it is charged at)

If the value of the goods is over £18 then you should be charged VAT. If the calculated value of the duty is over £7 then you should be charged the duty, otherwise it will be waived.

If Royal Mail are delivering it then they will want the charge paid before they will deliver, if it is a courier company then they will usually pay the charges themselves and then seek to recover it from you either on or after delivery.

So it would be £26ish (inlcuding shipping?), plus £4.55 VAT, so whatever the duty is it will be calculated on £30.55. SO if the duty rate for material is 20%, the duty would be £6.10, so you wouldn't be charged duty as it is below £7.

I don't know what the duty rate is but if you call those numbers they can tell you, i would be very surprised if it was more than this though!

no it was Christmas fabric actually not that I'm obsessed or anything!!!

Not that I'm stalking you, but I looked at some of those links from the other thread...'where can I buy fabric?' ummm.... am really wanting to buy fabric now!

BTW One of those other sites (remnant house) has loads of christmas fabric (rose and hubble)

£18 is around US$30 at the moment, by the way.

Courier companies will often sting you for a "handling charge" on VAT and duty on top.

the remnant house is uk based, so no import taxes/duties.
