No experience of this yet but have you asked him to block one nostril and then blow hard? Try tweezers, if that doesn't work, make your way to A&E!

nailpolish · 18/03/2008 12:08

my dd did this and i got it out with tweezers

it was delightful - snot covered raisin

themildmanneredbunny · 18/03/2008 12:08

no don't even try. get him to a and e and they will get it out with special long opointy pincer things. if you try and get it out yourself you may push it further up which is not GOOD

Porpoise · 18/03/2008 12:08

If it's really stuck up there, you need to do the "Parent's Kiss". (Or spend all morning in A&E)

How old is he?

themildmanneredbunny · 18/03/2008 12:08

ds did it with a playmobile cannon ball and again with polystyrene

spammandchocolateeggs · 18/03/2008 12:09

lol - this happened to us, ds put a piece of apple up his nose.

Will your ds blow out if you hold one nostril closed? That could help - worked for us.

meemar · 18/03/2008 12:12

How far up? is there any way you can try and get a bit of olive oil or something up there without pushing it further. You might make it greasy enough to slip out.

If not I'd take him to docs.

My DS1 (age 4) came to me the other day with round black thing that had fallen out of his nose. On closer inspection it turned out to be a pea. God knows how long it had been up there in order to turn black

DS2 did this with a rice krispie. I blocked the other nostril and told him to blow, then out it came with a snap, crackle, POP!

Porpoise · 18/03/2008 12:14

OK, Parent's Kiss:

All you do is close your child?s other nostril (the one without the blockage), seal your mouth over his mouth (just like doing mouth-to-mouth) and give a short, sharp blow.

This pushes air up the back of his nose and forces the object out. It works brilliantly almost all the time - and should save you a trip to A&E.?

hotcrossMonkeybun · 18/03/2008 12:16

when my little brother did this years ago, he was rushed to a&e to find a well qualified but underpaid doctor who could, er ,suck it out with a straw

spammandchocolateeggs · 18/03/2008 12:18

True story - my uncle, who is now early 50s, once put a pea up his nose when he was 3 and his mother only found out when it started sprouting and growing from his nose.

nailpolish · 18/03/2008 12:19

omg porpoise

thats dangerous

i wouldnt advise taht at all

what if the air went into his lungs

Threadworm · 18/03/2008 12:20

Air in lungs is bad??

hotcrossMonkeybun · 18/03/2008 12:23

excellent Threadworm. Both posts.

KimiKilledTheEasterBunny · 18/03/2008 12:30

With DS2 it was a niknak crisp!

nailpolish · 18/03/2008 12:31

forced air, yes

IdrisTheDragon · 18/03/2008 12:33

When DS put a raisin up his nose, I took him to A and E and was shown how to do the parent's kiss.

SoupDreggon · 18/03/2008 12:33

DS2 has done this (on separate occasions) with a small ball, a pea and an inch long piece of cooked macaroni. The macaroni had gone all the way in! He managed to snort them all out by holding one nostril shut and blowing out through the other. The macaroni was like that magician trick where they pull a string of flags from their hand, it just kept coming!

controlfreakyagain · 18/03/2008 12:35

ds2 when 3 kept saying he had an alien up his nose..... yes dear we said, has it got a name? is it a friendly alien etc? after 2 days of this he did a huge sneeze at the dinner table and an almond shot out of his nose..... he said "see i told you there was an alien up there"..... and it was just the right shape.... if not quite green. ha!

KimiKilledTheEasterBunny · 18/03/2008 12:37

my sister put the rubber from the end of a pencil up her nose and DHs brother put a light bulb out of a torch up his.........

Threadworm · 18/03/2008 12:38

So do you think that the Dementors in Harry Potter are actually just deeply misunderstood?

SorenLorensen · 18/03/2008 12:47

I've seen the "parent's kiss" on TV - one of those programmes about an A&E department with Gaby Someoneorother (in the days when I used to watch daytime TV) and I did it to ds1 when he stuck a piece of pasta (cooked) up his nose - it worked. The consultant on the programme I saw said it was far less inavsive and upsetting than a doctor sticking tweezers up a distressed child's nose.

TheDevilEatsNestle · 18/03/2008 12:54

I haven't had to do this yet thank god but I have pulled a long string of spaghetti from DS's nose before. He coughed as swallowing and it spectacularly went 'the wrong way'.

I now ignore DH who insists they should learn to eat spaghetti 'properly' and cut it into cm long pieces.

TheDevilEatsNestle · 18/03/2008 12:55

Controlfreaky. It's so funny when they think they are explaining things to you but you just don't get it.
