Wearing white to a wedding as a guest

Help! I'm struggling to find an outfit for my friends wedding next week. I've found 2 dresses that I love but both are white. Can you wear white to a wedding as a guest? If it makes any difference the wedding is being held at a registry office rather than a church. It is also a very small wedding with 10 people including the bride and groom!

It's not about being "mistaken for the bride".
It's about basic courtesy - white is the privilege of the bride, let her shine, let her stand out.

I had a small wedding and my narcissistic Mother wore a white dress with a hat and I had a slim white dress with a veil. She couldn't be dissuaded from her choice and I didn't want to cause upset as she is a very difficult woman.

My sil wore an ivory 50s style dress to my wedding and to be honest I didn't think anything of it at the time. However friends commented on it after saying they had noticed and how you shouldn't wear that colour to a wedding.
It looked nothing like my dress.

However I'd definitely pick another colour! As I've realised afterwards it's a well known thing that you don't do to a wedding.
