Has anyone moved from a house to an apartment?

We are going to move, hopefully for the new academic year. Coming from somewhere a bit shitty our house is quite cheap and we are going to possibly move down south so a house may not be possible or we may get an nicer apartment than house.

I would want something like the ground floor of a house to keep the garden as we have a dog ( We need to keep the dog obvioulsy but I am worried how he will cope) and so dd has somewhere to play.

I have lived in apartments before so am more relaxed about it than dp but am still worried that we may find it difficult to adjust.

Have other mumsnetters made similar moves.

When we first moved to Germany we sold our house in London and moved into a rented apartment here until we found our feet as it were. I actually really liked just living on one level for a while - it seemed to simplify life somehow and the space felt really huge. But we were living on the first floor so no garden which was a big miss - you are right to consider this essential if you are moving from a house. What puts me off appartments is the unknown factors such as who your neighbours are and communal charges which can be quite high.

Based on your budget on the other thread, have done a search within 1/2 mile of Broadstone, some houses see

THanks for the advice, it is a bit frustrating that I earn a good significantly above average salary but still can't afford a house. Mind you I think the bank would lend us more but it would we don;t want to over stretch ourslelves.

I quite like the idea of one level living, whenever we have hired an apartment or bungalow on holiday I have liked that aspect.

We moved from a house to an apartment this year and I love it. We decluttered a huge amount as there is less storage space, but I love living on one level with small children and I find we use all the space, all the time, whereas in a house you might not make much use of the bedrooms. It pays to give any children the largest rooms as bedrooms so they can keep their toys out of the living area. DH and I have a really small room, but we're only in there at night so it doesn't matter.

We have a huge superking bed which I think we may have to get rid off. We will also need a declutter but that is no bad thing.

But I know what you mean about using the whole house, dd never realy uses her bedroom and it is often a tip as she does a grab and run.
