How to bet in Ascot

Going to ascot Ladies Day this Thursday for one of those bucket list things. Four middle aged women and we don’t have a clue on how to bed. Mind you we will only bet the lowest possible (if possible £2). Does anyone know how it works? Do I bet only on one horse to win?

So you can bet for a horse to win, or each way, where you get money back if they are placed too (number of places will vary depending on the bookie). Bookies tend to have a row of stalls so pick the one with the best odds on the horse(s) you want to bet on. Usually there is a £2 min stake but this might be £1 each way. Basically go up the the bookie and say £x each way on number (inset number of horse - usually displayed on their stall) or £2 on number x to win. You can bet on as many horses as you like but don’t get carried away!

If you bet to win, and the horse wins, you get money back and your stake..ie you back £2 on a horse at 10/1 to win, you’ll win £22 - 10x£2 + £2 bet

Each way is a bit more complicated but if you bet £1 each way on a horse at 10/1 and it placed and it was paying places at 1/5 of the odds, you’d get £3 back. Maybe Google each way betting.

Hopefully this helps a little. Most of all, have fun!

Amazing, thank you so much!! It is good to know the right terms!!! 😄 I wouldn’t even know what to say when I bet so your message was so helpful!
how do I know which horse to bet on? Will they give me the list of horses?

Buy a race card, it will have a list of runners and there will be instructions in about how to bet, as well as how many places are paid (which depends on how many horses are running - e.g a 7 horses race would only pay 1st and 2nd.

Generally speaking everyone who works at the Tote betting windows will be lovely and very helpful. Just make sure you find a quiet window if you want to ask some questions so you're not holding up the line when people are queuing to place bets before the race.

Make sure you go and watch the horses being paraded in the ring beforehand as well, and watch the race from different spots - high up in the stand, near the fence etc.

Have fun!
