The pay at pump option at filling station.

I like to think I'm not too fazed with technology, I take my time and somehow I figure it out.

However when it comes to filling my car with petrol, I admit I've given up. Pulled into a filling station this evening.....(I only fill up once a month) and inadvertently pulled into the dreaded pay at pump option, it was too late to reverse and find a pay at kiosk pump.

I followed the instructions on screen, it came back as invalid input, tried again same result. Asked for help from another motorist, got no further he couldn't do it. Went into the kiosk and they had to change my pump to pay at kiosk. Embarrassing.
Am I the only one who struggles with this option?

You just put your card in and type in your pin. What else were you trying to do?

determinedtomakethiswork · 14/05/2023 20:09

Put your card in. Tap in your pin. Take your card out when it's approved. Then take the pump of a car.

Tolkienista · 14/05/2023 20:26

Yep did those options, following the instructions on screen...... rejected both times. Maybe I had a dodgy pump.

Do you have a proper debit/credit card or is it a basic account with a card cash card?
They don’t all accept the card cash basic cards.

UsingChangeofName · 14/05/2023 20:48

Are you putting your card in the right way up ?
If not concentrating, I've done that before.

Other than that, I can't see what is difficult or complicated about it.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 14/05/2023 20:56

Not an issue I've had OP, sorry. But trying to get Tesco pumps to scan the Clubcard QR code on the stupid new app is a different story. Bastarding thing.

Thanks. That feels better. Blush

dwightschrutebeets · 14/05/2023 20:57

I can never remember my pins as I use Apple Pay all the time so I avoid these. I very rarely even take my card out with me

Tolkienista · 14/05/2023 22:31

Yes I've got a debit card which I use all the time, yes I put it the right way in and I entered the correct pin too. Something went wrong.
I'll try again when I next fill up and hopefully it will be fine.

Pay at pump should first check your card, then next attempt to preauthorise an amount (probably now £120), if £120 isn’t available the banking system should give a maximum level up to your balance.

If any of those steps fail then the pump won’t allow fuel (unless you can choose ‘pay at counter’ at the same pump

HeddaGarbled · 14/05/2023 22:50

I love pay-at-pump - so much quicker than having to go in the shop, especially when there’s a queue.

I don’t know what’s going wrong for you. Is it always the same petrol station, or everywhere?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 14/05/2023 22:53

My guess is that there isn’t enough in your account to cover the amount that the pump tries to pre authorise. DS has had the same problem.

StrawberryPavlova · 15/05/2023 09:09

I can't use the Asda petrol station near me as it's pay at pump only, and I've never been able to get either of my debit cards to work in the machine, always get the same error message. But I have no problems at the Tesco pay at pump across the road, with the same cards. It's definitely the machines, not user error!

Bargellobitch · 15/05/2023 09:24

I've never had a problem with these machines. Must have been a dodgy one. They make it so much easier so not sure why you'd refer to it as the dreaded pay at pump?

ArbitraryHaddock · 15/05/2023 09:53

Not had a problem with pay at pump, but I can rarely use self service checkouts successfully. They don’t recognise my finger. I am touching and touching the screen and it does nothing. I call the assistant and s/he does exactly what I was doing and it works fine. Then I touch the screen again and nothing. My daughter says it’s because I’m impatient and just keep touching it instead of touching and waiting. But I don’t have all day! Also not very successful with the iPad, have to use voice software. And can’t use the car satnav. But iPhone seems okay fortunately.

Polis · 15/05/2023 09:56

I use them out of preference but they do occasionally just not work.

Bathroomlove · 15/05/2023 10:00

I love pay at pump, but I try to stick to the Esso one near me.

I used the Costco PAP a couple of weeks ago & got all flustered, but I used it last week & it was fine. My problem is anticipating what I need to do next & it's not always what IT wants done next, I'm too impatient & a queue makes me stressy. I just need to take my time!

it's SO much better than paying inside.

Tolkienista · 15/05/2023 12:20

Well I'm humbled by everyone's responses and it clearly must be me, judging by how many people are absolutely fine with paying at pumps, bar one or two.

I'll persevere and eventually master it, because that's definitely the way forward for refuelling our vehicles.

@ArbitraryHaddock do you have very cold hands? I find if I'm very cold touch screens don't work.

Have you tried a stylus for your ipad etc? Like this?

ArbitraryHaddock · 15/05/2023 12:47

@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut (cool username!). I do have cold hands, and very dry/thin skin. Thanks for the link. I have a graphics pen, but that’s meant for drawing. I’m sure a stylus would work, but I’m used to using my voice, now. :)
