Need some hiking boots/shoes and what do you Mums recommend?
Also which type do you favour, the sturdy hiking shoe/boot or the flexible trainer/trail type of hiking shoe/boot?

I’d go for a lightweight leather/Goretex boot. The really sturdy ones are a bit tougher to break in. I have La Sportiva TX4 boots and they are like slippers for me but that’s not to say they’ll be ideal for you. I also have full leather Altbergs to wear with crampons and they are tough to walk a distance in.

I've just bought a pair of Sorel walking boots, they're waterproof and really comfy/soft while being supportive. I can't bear the hardened leather type ones.

I've got cortex Land Rover waking boots and they're the best ones I've ever had

gortex

For hardcore mountain climbing boots that’ll last a decade or two, look at Scarpa boots.

For summer hiking/ bouldering that’ll last 3+ years get Salomon, something like this

It's very dependent on the fit rather than brand. If you can get to a decent shop that does fittings, you'd be better doing that.
I have wide feet and like the fit of Merrells, but have recently gone for the inov8 boots as a lightweight option with better grip.

Meindl

BeatriceFranklin · 28/03/2023 14:35

I have Scarpa Rush boots.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 28/03/2023 21:17

I have Salomon with insoles and also a pair of Merrells. Both pairs are extremely comfortable, but I took my time in choosing them at a outdoor shop.

It depends very much on the kind of terrain you’ll be walking over. The trainer type shoes will be fine for formed paths and trails, but if you’re doing something more challenging you’ll benefit from the ankle support provided by the sturdy boot styles.

SpaghettiSquash · 28/03/2023 21:23

I have a pair of Altbergs and they are extremely comfortable. No breaking in required.

FictionalCharacter · 28/03/2023 21:25

Depends on your foot shape, the terrain you'll be walking on and the mileage you intend to do, and whether you'll be doing 3 season walking or hardcore winter. Look for online gear reviews on sites like Country Walking and Trail magazines (Live for the outdoors).

Meindl were great for me, lightweight, waterproof, supportive and protective but not too rigid.
