Is there a way to keep cats out of our garden??

Sorry if this has been posted in the 'wrong' place...

Our little 3yo is very frightened by anything on 4 legs. Our local neighbourhood cat has decided to use our garden as its own personal toilet and hang-out. Our DD gets v upset - any suggestions as to how to persuade this cat to find another watering hole?

a gun

anniebear · 06/02/2008 19:36

Of course I meant a water pistol

SleepIsForTheWeak · 06/02/2008 19:39

you get something called "Lion's Roar" (!!!)
which is basically Lion poo, apparently it works because the cat smells the poo and thinks there is a BIG cat there and buggars off.
I hear it works, never tried it myself.

Like the water pistol though

a big dog

some toy rubber snakes in the borders, cats are scared of snakes

orange peel is supposed to stop them digging their little latrines

one of those cat silhouette things with glittery eyes, in an angry shape - do you know the things I mean?

any sort of anti-cat mulch material - big pebbles?

speak2deb · 06/02/2008 19:45

NOTHING works. Absolutely nothing. Except for a dog.

And I speak as a cat lover. I have two of the blighters and I have tried everything (citrus smells, sonar, dried lions pooh, the lot) to keep them off freshly dug borders, but nothing works. They always break through my defences.

Vacua · 06/02/2008 19:52

you could do much much worse than work on your daughter's fear of animals?

Scramble · 06/02/2008 19:53

If they have a favourit place they dig, you can put empty drinks bottles filled with water and the label removed (don't like the relfection)
Or pieces of netting in the areas they like, I used to put it accross the sand pit.
Or flat stones on the bits of the flowers beds they dig up .
Or hire a local teenager in with their rifle and let them use it for target practice.

Vacua · 06/02/2008 19:56

you must get a pet of your own

I have decided

a kitten would be good?

pointydog · 06/02/2008 20:02

water gun, best thing

MsHighwater · 06/02/2008 20:14

While I have some sympathy, I agree with Vacua. By all means try to keep cats out of your garden (and good luck with that) but don't neglect to tackle your dd's fear of 4 legged creatures. These anxieties have a habit of expanding if left unaddressed.

Just heard this on the radio, not my idea promise! Cats wee on their territory so if you or preferably DH for the sake of convenience, go out and wee round your fences it apparently keeps them away. At least several people rang in and swore it worked!

jeremyspants · 09/02/2008 14:02

Super-soaker 2000! I think you get them in Woolies.

littlerach · 09/02/2008 14:06

My elderly, very garden-proud grandmother swears by Jays Fluid, which i think is bleach based. She puts it on her pathways. .

My FIL runs wildly at them whilst making a loud PSSHHWWWWW noise at them; they sit and look at him and leisurly stroll away.

Leslaki · 09/02/2008 14:20

soak some tea bags in olbas oil and scatter them round the garden/on your fences. It works - apparetnly they hate he smell and the teabags break down into your garden.

kat08 · 12/03/2008 13:13

We tryed that silent roar stuff, it worked for us took a couple of days though before the cats stopping coming. Got it from a website called silent roar online if anyone wants to look what it is. I hate cats

ALMummy · 12/03/2008 20:36

Chuck a bucket of water over it the next time you see it. Have one ready by the door. It wont come back.
