I did Indian dancing to the first song on my son's MP3 player and 10yo ds said "don't ever do that in public, right?" ( I agreed, it's not pretty) but then I heard this and was ed.

Umm, i think its actually the norm. Lots of music aimed at pre-teens and early teens uses language like that.

And just to put this in context I don't listen to music at all really. No music, no ipod, nothing. I'm not that interested, lost interest in about 1980 or something. So occasionally have Abba or some punk on in the kitchen but contemporary music is not anywhere within my sphere of experience.

and the radio edits are often different to what you can download or buy on their album - britney spears new album is almost pornographic and even Avril lavigne uses language like that on her album.

I'm guessing that he's probably listening to hip hop or rap, which are both notorious for their mysognistic lyrics. The lyrics are cringe making, ds used to be into this stuff before he grew out of it.
Mind you, everytime he listened to it, I did used to give him a lecture about why you should respect women, your fellow man etc.
