what do you do with a used baby car seat you no longer need?

My dd has just grown out of her mamas and papas baby car seat (up to 9 months) and is now in her new one. Any ideas with what to do with the seat now? No-one I know needs one and charity shops won't take them (health & safety) and apparently you're not meant to sell them on as the buyer can't know for sure it's 100pc safe. It cost a staggering £160 and is in great condition and never been in an accident. Am at a loss as to what to do with it!! Any ideas??

offer it on freecycle? hold onto it for the next baby?

FrayedKnot · 03/02/2008 19:58

I've just freecycled one, but you could try selling it. It's buyer beware isn;t it?

BroccoliSpears · 03/02/2008 19:58

Oooh ooh! You could give it to me! Ours is 8 years old and I'm not happy about putting the new baba in it when he/she arrives. Am going to have to buy a new one as no one I know / trust is getting rid of one.

Ahem. OR you could put it on Freecycle with a clear concience if you know it's not been dropped / crashed etc. I'm sure someone would be very pleased.

I have no idea what to do with my old one though - couldn't give it to anyone to use as I don't consider it safe enough. Landfill I guess Shame

I bought my mamas and papas car seats through ebay - nothing at all to stop you selling them on and there are definitely people who want to buy them - they are SO expensive new!

MadamePlatypus · 03/02/2008 20:10

I asked this question a few months ago. We ended up e-baying it, but were very clear about the fact that it was used and that although it had not been in any accidents and was only 9 months old, buying second hand car seats wasn't recommended by ROSPA. I think we received about £4 for it, which was fine as I didn't want to send it to landfill.

Blimey - someone got a bargain! I bought two for £80 including p&p. Was happy to pay this as still less than half the price of new.

Pannacotta · 03/02/2008 20:34

Offer it for free or for sale on here?

PerkinWarbeck · 03/02/2008 20:37

can you hang onto it until someone you know needs it? we've just passed ours onto friends after letting it gather dust for a good while - they know that they can trust us when we day it's not been in an accident.

MadamePlatypus · 04/02/2008 07:54

I think maybe it was because I was so honest!

I am not sure that it is a good idea to hold onto car seats for too long- I was comfortable passing this seat on because it was still 'current'. I wouldn't want to drag one out of the loft for a friend in a few year's time as I would imagine that safety standards will have improved by then and my car seat would be out of date.

I agree its an ethical dilemma. I contacted Britax because a while ago they were doing a car seat amnesty where they collected old car seats. They aren't doing this any more, and recommended that I took the seat to the dump and cut the straps so nobody could use it again.

bobblehat · 04/02/2008 08:08

Brocolispears - do you still need a baby car seat? Where are you? I've got one - and matching travel system with all the bits. It's a britax. If you're anywhere near yorkshire, let me know and you're welcome to it - don't want anything for it.

Flllightattendant · 04/02/2008 08:12

Check the polystyrene insert, if it is not cracked then sell it on ebay. There is no reason not to if you know it is safe imo.

If the inner is cracked or you want to be on the safe side, replace it - £5 inc P&P from M&P!

Hulababy · 04/02/2008 08:29

I sold both of ours, but to friends or freinds of friends. They were happy to buy as they knew the seats had been looked after and not in any accidents/drops.

igglepiggles · 04/02/2008 08:31
