Is there a reason to open curtains if you are out of house during day light hours?

I leave the house in the dark and come back when it is dark. Am wondering if I can save 5 minutes in the morning and not bother opening curtains. (not in the rooms where we have house plants obviously). Is there a reason to open them from a health or safety perspective for example?

Thanks

no, but burglars in the area may think you are out all day if they notice theya re always closed

Desiderata · 16/01/2008 15:34

If I was a burgler, I'd burgle you

It's making a plain statement: you're not in.

marina · 16/01/2008 15:36

Agree, burglars note these things
Bedroom curtains, perhaps, but downstairs, never

itsahardknocklife · 16/01/2008 15:39

I have houseplants and they need light so I have to open my curtains.

jumpingbeans · 16/01/2008 15:40

This is one of my pet hates, curtians closed in the day, in or out- even worse curtains closed and light on

Cremolafoam · 16/01/2008 15:42

i wonder about this too.go outin the dark come home in the dark. my dm says keep them closed to keep the heat in.dh says open to make it look like someone actually lives here.

one of life's great quandries

TigerFeet · 16/01/2008 15:45

I don't always remember to open any other than the living room, I'm in such a hurry in the morning

Saves me having to close them at night though

DH used to work nights so our bedroom curtains were pretty much permanently shut then.

If we go away dh likes to half open them - of course any burglars won't notice we are away then will they

ZippiBabes · 16/01/2008 15:47

my bedroom curtains usually stay closed and the living room has shutters whihc i often can't be bothered to open and i do have the light on when i'm here if they are closed

Kimi · 16/01/2008 16:00

Bedroom curtains stay closed downstairs get opened.

mumeeee · 16/01/2008 16:29

Leaving curtains closed all day may be noticed by burglers.

GetOrfMoiLand · 16/01/2008 16:32

Easier not to shut them at night, really. That's what I do (not to be recommened if your windows are all draughty)

loopylou6 · 16/01/2008 17:01

see now my curtains are for show only and if anyone dares shut them i would snap there fingers

mosschops30 · 16/01/2008 17:04

urgh no, common people leave their curtains shut all day whilst they sit smoking and watching jezza kyle and trisha!!!!

Plus my mother always goes on about 'ooh it looks like somone died' some old wives thing no doubt

lol mosschops, that made me giggle

MioMao · 16/01/2008 17:25

just to be contrary... I have never been burgled (touch wood) and we leave our curtains closed if we are going to be out be all day.

The only time my DH has been burgled was when he lived in a ground floor flat and accidentally left the curtains open one day - opportunist thief obviously peered through the window, saw hi-fi and TV, nobody around so decided to break in.

obviously have curtains open if we are in - unlike strange family who live across the road and haven't opened their front curtains since we moved in a year ago. Must be big Jeremy Kyle fans...

loopylou6 · 16/01/2008 17:31

lolol MM

pointydog · 16/01/2008 17:31

It takes you 5 mins to open curtains? lol

You are inefficient

JingleyJen · 16/01/2008 17:33

the guide lines from our local police is to close the curtains at the back and leave the ones at the front open. A burglar will try to break in at the back but will not know if anyone can see through the front windows so will therefore hesitate and perhaps choose a different house to target. They are also less likely to spend time looking through the windows at the front to see if it is worth it and they cant see in at the back.

Lasvegas · 16/01/2008 17:40

pointydog- 4 massive bay windows which have blinds plus curtains, and the blinds are individual one that have to be winched up so in total I have to winch up 18 blinds then open the curtains of 4 windows.

There's the burglary issue indeed

But also the fact that closed curtains during the day signifies a death in the house

pointydog · 16/01/2008 17:56

why put the blinds up and down every day and night? Swish the curtains. Leave blinds half way. You have so many options. Or indeed, just leave 'em shut.
