Have sat here most of the evening trying to think what we could do, and honestly can't think of anything!

DH is 40 in March and I am 40 in July.

We are not real party throwers, although we do like to have an occassional evening (ie Christmas and invite a few friends around).

I did suggest we renew our vows but DH thought I was teasing, we will have been married 16 yrs this year(he said it wasn't long enough!

Depends on how much money you want to spend!

I had a weekend in Blackpool (stayed with Bubblerock) and took everyone on every ride on the Pleasure Beach. It was great fun & the kids had the Best time!

DH had a party at home - v. cheap.

My friend had a week in the Maldives and her kids stayed with Granny!

Maldives sounds good, although I don't think our budget will stretch to that! Having a new kitchen fitted in a few weeks plus going on holiday in August with DH and 3 DDs

Hey ho back to the drawing board - thanks anyway!

Hire a fab house or cottage in the country for a long weekend and invite as many friends as you can fit into it to have a jolly drunken saturday evening, and a hungover sunday roast.

This is a tried and tested method in our circle of friends and is brill.

Weekend in NYC, you can get a good deal and it will be fab I guarantee!

pinkbubble · 07/01/2008 23:48

Hi - my DH and I also both celebrate our 40th's this year - though I am just over 2 months older than him!

Will be watching this thread with interest. Our only thought so far was hire a hall and have a Barn Dance - but that looks as though it would £500-£700 before we have provided any food and drink, so that's a no-no. Too many people to have a barbecue at home (we're planning a June party as I'm May and DH is July).

Weekend in NYC sounds fab - please keep us all updated as to what you decide to do.

Have party! Do it in May, in the middle of both birthdays.

Go on a hot air balloon ride. I was given one for my fortieth and it was amazing. only trouble is I had to go alone. It probably costs around £200 each though. If you could afford it, it would be great to have the whole balloon filled with friends and family.. they can take about 16 people.. but I think you have to be over 18 so you DCs might feel left out. There might be an upper age limit too.

Whoops, two balloon rides might be a bit much

My best friend and her husband, had theirs last year, him in Sept her in Dec.
What they did sounded lovely to me. They went for a 'dirty' weekend to Morroco for his, and to Italy for hers.

cottonflee · 12/01/2008 23:13

Mind you my when DH was 21 his sis was 18 and his parents were 40 all four birthdays were in 4 months. His mother was going to throw a huge party for all of them on his sis 18th (middle b'day) but, she did something better instead she divorced his twat of a dad. DH, his sis and his ma, all say it was their best present ever.
Sorry, that's very inappropriate, but always makes my DH smile.

DH has suggested that when we are on holiday in August, maybe we could disappear for a night to Monaco. (his mother is coming with us to the South Of France) Not sure what she would say to this as she will have no car etc!

Funny I came across this because it is DH 40th this April although I am 5 years younger so no special birthday for me for a while yet.

As a surprise I am arranging a party in the function room of a pub with nibbles on the Saturday night and also as a surprise booking a weekend to Center Parcs with the kids. Then the bit he will know about is lunch with all the family on the Sunday at a really nice restaurant.

Don't know if that helps!

theITgirl · 19/01/2008 12:17

For m 40th, went with DH & kids to stay with friends in the south of France. So I spent the day paddling in the Med with the children & in the evening our friends babysat while DH & I went out for a meal.

Other friends for their joint 40th threw a picnic party in the local park. We all brought some food & played games & races - eg egg & spoon, three legged etc.

Both great fun

We had a weekend in Paris (where we had also been for our honeymoon) - PILs looked after DCs. It would have been romantic, but naturally DH linked it in with a work related meeting so I was left on the Friday to wander around Paris alone!
