a question about press release etiquette for people who know about PR, media relations, etc

We've been doing our own PR for our business since last summer. It's gone just great. We've sent a few press releases to relevant UK publications and each time one of them has published the story. This latest one, sent this morning, is proving very popular and so far two of the publictions have wanted to publish the story (directly lifting from the press release). What is the 'etiquete', if any, in this situation? Obviously I will have to tell the second magazine that the first one want to use it for the coming issue, since they responded first. Any other tips? TIA
I want to keep up the illusion that we know what we are doing, despite DIYing it!!

If you told them it's an exclusive then you must tell them about first mag using story, if not, it's fair game. Every mag to itself. If you want to be ultra nice you could tell second mag you think first mag will be using story and offer them second story (if you have one). But you risk losing coverage altogether from second mag if they decide to drop story.
What's your business and do you want to hire me on a freelance basis?!

agree with holly

if you sent out a general press release you are under no obligation to tell one magazine that another one is covering it, unless you contacted them directly to offer an exclusive

great, thanks very much to both of you. That's what I thought! It was a general press release so I will tell 2nd mag that it being by 1st mag and offer them a different story, or a development on the same in a month or two.

thanks for the offer holly
we offer mountain safaris in bosnia and at the moment it is a quite specialist market but if it grows... who knows, I might track you down!

Wow, that's quite specialised. But think of me next year when I'm languishing on maternity leave and losing little grey cells. I'll be in need of some brain stimulation!
