How much do you spend a quarter on Gas - I think they have our bill wrong

Just got our latest bill from British Gas and they have said our estimate is going up to £40 a month. A year ago we were paying estimate of £16. Can one child add that much gas? We are only in a one bedroom flat so can't understand how it could be that much over summer.
Can I have some ammunition to go to them with please?

give them an actual meter reading.

JanH · 11/11/2004 22:12

Have they done an estimated reading? Have you checked your meter?

JanH · 11/11/2004 22:13

£40 p.m. does sound ridiculous for a 1-bed flat.

MrsMiaWallace · 11/11/2004 22:13

do a reading yourself and try to find out last one 'you' took. we just got over £200 back as they had been 'estimating' wrong and blokes who come round, hadnt read them properly.hth

Chuffed · 11/11/2004 22:14

yes and apparently our meter is about 500 more than what they estimate which we can't understand how it can be unless they are wrong. There are 5 flats here.

p.s they said we could pay £30 pm and still be in credit and we have 3bed detatched with one dd.

MrsMiaWallace · 11/11/2004 22:15

someones wired into your mains supply!!!!!!!!!

Chuffed · 11/11/2004 22:17

It isn't for electricity we have to pay £30 a month for that on top of this.

I know British Gas have just put there bills up by something ridiculous - we have just changed supplier. Might be worth checking on-line who your cheapest supplier will be.

JanH · 11/11/2004 22:19

We switched in summer to ecotricity (who supply "green" electricity) and they have a supposed meter "reading" 10,000kwh higher than it should be - that was from somebody coming round - suspect they went to the wrong house!

Have you moved into this flat recently? Did you get your own reading when you moved in?

we pay £40.00 as we owed them money, but during july, aug and sept we were only using about £20.00 p/m gas. in the winter thou it's normally about £120.00 ish perquarter. (we don't have a gas cooker so our electric is normally about £70.00-£90.00 per quarter all year around) thats to heat etc... a det. 3 bedroomed house.

MunnzieB · 11/11/2004 22:27

i think they've put the charges up twice in the past year B?G, but i don't pay much attention tbh.

Chuffed · 11/11/2004 22:32

Thanks for the info, dh will call them tomorrow as it looks like our meter reading corresponds with one of the other flats so I think we might be paying for theirs all of a sudden.
