dd has a horrible cough and is feeling crap

I have no night cough stuff only the non drowsy so I figured medised might help her sleep better as she keeps waking up coughing but I don't know if they are contraindicated

Does the Guaifenisen have a generic name. I'm looking in DH's BNF for children and it isn't there.

guiafenesin it is spelled
is in benylin but I think that is the generic name

OK we have the Tixylix Chesty cough with the Guaifenisen in, and have given it to the dds with calpol. I'll check in the bnf to see if there is a problem with the additional thing that is in medised.

Hmm BNF is not helping. But then I am full of cold and brain is not firing on all cylinders. sorry. DH not in yet to ask. Can you give the medised now and I'll get back to you about the cough stuff (I bet DH will say it's fine...he thinks cough meds are a load of old cobblers anyway).

I have just spoke with the pharmacist today about the same thing. The problem is that guiafenesin is an expectorant (gets up the mucus in a chesty cough) and the stuff in medised contains a supressant (which keeps the mucus down).

Guiafenesin also makes them more active/awake.

He said, they contradict each other when given at the same time as in a chesty cough you really want the stuff to come up, not be supressed in the lungs.

As a result of what he's said, I've put my chesty coughy DD to bed with just paracetamol tonight so looks like we'll be in for a crap nights sleep!

I'll then give her Guafenesin in the morning when I want her to be perky.

Hope this makes sense!

Oh no!! I did that last night (hence my trip to pharmacist today).....The problem is that there's nothing you can give them for a Chesty Cough at night that will also knock them out. What a bummer.
