Pixiefish, you're supposed to keep jams, marmalades etc in the fridge after they've been opened it says it on the jar. also tomato ketchup etc. My granny is always moaning that her jam has gone mouldy, well put it in the fridge granny, "oh no dear jam isn't supposed to be put into the fridge." I used to work in a restaurant Environmental health told us that all jams, ketchps etc had to be kept in the fridge so that's what I do.

Also top tip here if you keep your tomato ketchup in the fridge it pours out of the bottle easier than if it were kept at room temperature.

oh and I was told that bananas went black in the fridge, now they just go black in the fruit bowl, along with apples, oranges, receipts, keys and junk glad I'm not the only one who does this. Grapes, mushrooms, carrots and broccoli live in the fridge and onions and potatoes go in the cupboard.

Oh, an interesting thread. Such a topic close to my heart.
Coddy, this is one of Dear departed Michelle's finest inventions stayfresh bags
have used them for all sorts and they really work!!

Grapes in the fridge, everything else in the fruit bowl - except bananas which sort of knock about somewhere else 'cos of the gas they give off (can't face the thought of a banana tree). All veg. in the fridge - even potatoes which I know you are not supposed to put in there. I have nowhere else cool to keep it - no garage or larder.

And I keep my fruit bowl on top of the fridge - if anyone's interested

really Gibnger _ i always wondered, fil is scandanavina

I don't have a larder either, moo, but do have a kitchen cupboard on NE corner of kitchen so spuds and onions live in there, all other veg in fridge.

Tomatoes (not being veg) live in bowl on counter. (And eggs live in box on counter too.)

Apples keep for weeks in the fridge; buy the orange sticker ones for tuppence and just take out a few at a time for the fruit bowl. Have never kept grapes in fridge but will start now as they always seem to go soft and sad after 24 hours in bowl on counter.

Banana skins go black in fridge but fruit itself is OK.

Jam doesn't go mouldy in the cupboard if you always use a clean spoon to get it out of the jar, and in this house a bottle of ketchup doesn't live long enough to go mouldy in the cupboard.

all fruit in various fruit bowls (currently 3 on the go...) though i put nectarines in the fridge in summer rather than let them succumb to those evil fruit flies.

whilst on the subject of fruit, i saw some cherries on oxford st today for £5/pound! and even worse, i was tempted to buy them (but didn't)....

JanH · 12/11/2004 20:19

You could have bought 4, hc - 2 for each ear.

Congrats btw!
