How should I get rid of unwanted kitchen knives?

It seems like an odd question but I was wondering, can you just bung them in the bin or should I take them to a tip or something? DH thought it might even be best to take them to a police station where they have one of those amnesty boxes.

Any thoughts? We're talking about 8 or 9 knives from about 3" to about 8" blades.

TIA

I think the police station is a sensible idea

i wrap mine up in lots of newspaper, tape together then bung in bin. i suppose you could make them blunt by rubbing them on some stone if you're that way inclined.

You'd be amazed how many people do give them to police amnesty boxes (my dad destroys the contents of these boxes, which is a long dull process!). I shall ask him when I speak to him next what alternatives there are.

Thanks all.
I think I'll have a look on our local police website and see if they reccommend anything before pitching up and the local bobby's with a fist full of knives.
