we've been looking for car insurance. i am the main driver with dh (who has 8 points on his license ) as the named driver. i have a clean license [holy glow].

we've (well, dh) has been looking online and all the quotes coming out at about £1K a year. except Diamond which is half that? are they kosher? why would it be so much cheaper. all the quotes are for fully comprehensive insurance.

any advice or recommendations gratefully received.

Check things like legal cover, courtesy (?) car things like that, but, they are a 'proper' company

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 26/11/2007 18:38

Aren't they just for women only?

DaisyMoo · 26/11/2007 18:38

They are kosher, but they will probably be quoting you for 10 months' cover rather than a year. Even so it sounds like a good deal!

ivykaty44 · 26/11/2007 18:38

As far as I understand insurance is done on risk, therefore a company wants to spread the risk and take on all different catagouries of people to spread the risk.

So if they havn't got many people fitting your particular catagoury then it will be cheaper.

This is why you can only get a valid quote 30 days before as they have to make there numbers and stats all add up to as low a risk overall as possible.

I'm with Diamond - cos they are cheap and I have no no claims.

They arent as good as come of the bigger insurers like Direct Line, but are still ok. Things I have found out - when my car was broken into they only covered £100 of personal items - which covered some cds - not the leather jacket or any of the other stuff.... the only offer courtesy car if it wasnt your fault, and they usually insist that if you have an accident you use their recommended garage.

Part from that they have been ok - certainly not so bad as to be worth goin with another insurer at a cost of £500

Lauriefairycake · 26/11/2007 18:47

That still sounds pretty expensive - I've just changed mine to Churchill after elephant sent me a renewal for twice the price. Got it for £243. Apparently Tescos have a good deal on as well, don't know anymore but my friend just changed to them.

flowerybeanbag · 26/11/2007 18:49

I recommend Diamond - to be fair I have never claimed with them, but in terms of customer service my experience has been consistently fab.

blushingm · 26/11/2007 20:40

diamond are 'kosher' they are part of EUI which do elephant.co.uk, bell and admiral. They also do confused.com.

You get a courtesy car whenever you claim accident of theft etc aslong as you have comprehensive cover and use thier garage - it's in the garage contract that they give one which is why you don't get one if you use your own garage.

One way to get quote down is to go for a higher excess - you are gambling that you won't make and claim and have to pay it

PS I work for EUI claims so I know - Diamond are cheaper as they are rating on a woman who statisically will have less claims and lower value claims - as everyone knows women are much better at everything including driving many things are rated including area, age, car, occupation, points, claims the list goes on and on

blushingm · 26/11/2007 20:42

PS if you have full no claims it's very unlikely they have quoted for 10 months - they do a 10 month policy which gives you 1 years no claims at the end providing you haven't made a claims - it's for people who want to build up their no claims bonus quickley

HTH

Heathcliffscathy · 26/11/2007 23:13

so diamond is fine, but we should try tesco and churchill.
