We were given a nice illustrated one for DS's christening, but it's in DS's room at the moment so I can't check the details. Will let you know tomorrow if no one else has come up with one by then.

i'd love that, thanks very much twinkle.

ds has the Usbourne one

Furball · 24/11/2007 08:45

which is £4.79 on Amazon and you can also search inside the book

Bart Simpson's Guide to Life. The thinking boy's bible.

Aitch · 24/11/2007 11:41

well tbh i thought i should check with his mum if a bible was okay... then i thought 'she's getting him christened, ffs, she'll just have to tolerate a bible in the house.'
thanks, will check out the usbourne one. if it's only a fiver i can get him something else as well. any suggestions? (apart from B Simpson. ahem. i am taking my godmothering seriously).

Aitch, I'm so sorry I keep forgetting to look until DS is in bed. Are you still interested? If so, I promise I'll let you know tomorrow.

booot · 27/11/2007 00:10

just to confuse you - nothing to do with bible suggestion. thought i'd throw it in anyway.
an engraved certificate holder with his name and dates on. we got one for DH's godson, silver plated ones are beautiful, not ridiculous prices and we got one at samuels

Catholic or CofE? Different bibles....

If Catholic, the New Jerusalem Bible is the book to look for. You can get it leather bound, even in WHITE (which is nice for a child), with Gold writing on the front. Very pretty.

You can also get a Childrens Bible, they do them in M&S, with nice and easy to grasp biblical stories, beautifully illustrated.

Another good gift is The Fairy Tales of the Grimm Brothers, in hardback, or something equally classic. Silver plated cutler is also another nice gift, especially for a 4 year old, as the gift sets often come with knife, fork and spoon, and some can be engraved with the childs name.

much obliged, you lot. particularly as i had COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN to do anything about this and time's a tickin'.

OK, I finally remembered (and have gone into DS's room at great risk to retrieve said item). It's the Noah's Ark Bible (New Revised Standard Version Illustrated Children's Bible) and I like it because it's the one I remember from going to Sunday school. It's published by World Publishing. HTH.

i think you should get him something to play with to go with the bible. Other people will buy silver things and bibles and rosary beads and crosses etc.. but a nice toy car or something would go down a treat - how rubbish must it be to be 4 at your christening.[ grin]

gigglewitch · 29/11/2007 00:12

good thinking custy.

a pope-mobil? sorry, hope that isn't offending anyone

Tortington · 29/11/2007 00:12

no offence - unless you bought the sniper rifle too

I am having my Children Christened in a couple of weeks and I have specifically asked for nothing from H Samuel. I think it's total rubbish to be honest. I don't care if they buy my kids the latest Shirley Hughes book (which would be better) but no tat from H Samuel.

frisbyrat · 29/11/2007 08:05

I'm thinking about getting this for my goddaughter's christening. It's OUP, so should be decent quality, and it's leather bound (the picture just shows the presentation box). Bung a tasteful dated inscription in the front, and job's a good'un!

Plus both reviews are entertaining...
