Child Benefit - Change Bank Accounts?

Flamesparrow · 21/11/2007 09:02

I don't know if there is already a thread discussing this - sorry if there is!!

Should we be changing bank accounts?

I was wondering about that. I doubt the banks could cope with 15 million changes.

Flamesparrow · 21/11/2007 09:09

Could they really turn people down though? It is all very well saying that we are protected and won't be charged for any fraud stuff, but I know from seeing people on here with c/c fraud that it can take a long time to get that money back

I think just watch your account as it is at the moment.

Seeing as all this information has been missing for weeks already surely a criminal gang would have put it to use before we were all alerted?

I think it has fallen behind a filing cabinet somewhere...

Flamesparrow · 21/11/2007 09:12

I think it is probably floating round the system too.

tribpot · 21/11/2007 09:14

The cat ate our child benefit records

frostythesnowmum · 21/11/2007 09:15

I wonder who the poor sod was was posted the discs -what do you think happened to them!!!

GreenGlassGoblin · 21/11/2007 09:16

what have you missed Trinity? 25 million names, addresses, bank details, NI numbers and dates of birth gone 'missing' in transit between one govt department and the National Audit Office! Some eejit sent a computer disk or two out without recording/registering the post and it never got to where it was going...

Flamesparrow · 21/11/2007 09:19

I sitll don't get why everything was on one disc

OP posts:
TrinityRhino · 21/11/2007 09:20

OOOO MY GOD
sheesh

moonmother · 21/11/2007 09:23

Very concerning, not just as they have bank details etc but they have everything they need to actually steal people's identities.

Here's a link to the apology on the HM revenue and customs site, with info.

mawbroon · 21/11/2007 09:26

I am trying not to worry about this. If there are 15 million sets of details, the chances of mine being picked are quite slim really.

That would just be my luck though. No, I couldn't land the 14million to one odds for the lottery but would get my identity stolen from 15million others.

frostythesnowmum · 21/11/2007 09:27

Hope they weren't in alphabetical order we begin with A

claricebeansmum · 21/11/2007 09:27

If the discs did fall into the wrong hands they would only need to take £1 from each account for get £15 million

Flamesparrow · 21/11/2007 09:31

Think how much they could sell for on some black market

well, last week i'd already started the process of changing bank accounts, opened a ew account.

so once its up and running i will be switching all my benefits over to that account. but i am very slow and not organsised.

nimnom · 21/11/2007 09:35

Am I being naive to be more worried about childrens name, address dob etc than my bank details. I've changed my passwords this morning and I keep a close eye on my account anyway.

Niecie · 21/11/2007 09:41

I'm with Mawbroom. The chances of any of our identities being stolen is tiny and if the crooks tried to steal too many they would easily be caught.

If I were them, I would take £2 out of every bank account and disappear. They would be set up for life and few people are going to miss £2 that much.

LucyLasticBand · 21/11/2007 09:45

phew, i have nothing else in the acount that that goes into, and am ony allowed to go 100. overdrawn.
thank god.
