Setting shop anti theft alarms off when I haven't half inched anything

This has happened to me twice recently!

Today was the second occasion - left WHSmiths with 2 bags of stuff and the alarm went off. It's a little embarrassing having your bags searched and items checked off against your receipt, in full view of an openly agog, slack jawed with anticipation, public .

What could be causing this? Could it be my bluetooth mobile phone? The items I bought were small things like printer cartridges - no obvious security tags left on....

I set them off in Sains as the check out woman hadn't deactivated them.

So I've perhaps been unlucky and encountered 2 dopey shop assistants recently?

Can't imagine it would be the bluetooth, otherwise they would be set off all the time!!

I used to work in a hop with these and they were always set off by wheelchairs so there is obviously something external that could set them off. It might be something that you have bought in another shop?

possibly the printer cartirdges they can have a security tag in the packaging most computer items do

i had this buying a stick for the pc recently went into next and it went off going in and coming out then went to monsoonand had the same thing it was inside the plastic blister pack inside the card label so couldn't be removed withouth removing the packing if they didn't have the correct machine

library books?

handlemecarefully · 17/11/2007 18:29

Printer cartridge....could be!

The previous time I set an alarm off I was carrying a newly purchased, still in its packaging, memory card for a digital camera - perhaps the same sort of thing

this happened to me today - i had reciept and just walked out - am not waiting becuase of their inept system.

pn the plus side temporary staff at xmas - bonus - some inept member of staff - aged about 12 didn't charge me for a cd i bought today which was great

handlemecarefully · 17/11/2007 18:31

I would have kept walking custardo but the security guard was right there at the store exit. Perhaps he had been shadowing me because I looked like a dodgy character!

my wallet had a tag in it for ages and caused me a problem or too - perhaps try checking yours or similar

LadyOfTheFlowers · 17/11/2007 18:35

where i live, if you buy from hmv, you set off whsmiths, annsummers and next on the way in, even though hmv deactivate so you dont set them off when you leave.

Tortington · 17/11/2007 18:35

pmsl @dodgy character - i bet your lovely

zippitippitoes · 17/11/2007 18:38

yep the memory card would do it...something in the pacvkaging i think they are meant to swipe them acrosse something to deactivate but they don't all have the swipers
