Is there some way to trace a phone number?

I'm sure this has been asked before. I've had a couple of phone calls from a number and they hang up on the answerphone.

It's probably telesales but is there somewhere you can type a number in and find out whose it is?

Have you tried 1471 ?

GunpowderDragonsAndSoup · 06/11/2007 11:50

Yes, I know what the number is

I want to type it into a website and have it tell me it's a company ringing to say I've won £1,000,000.

Probably a stupid question, but have you tried ringing the number to find out which company it is?

Have you tried just googling it? That sometimes works. Otherwise you can work out what area it is by doing an area code search on the BT website.

GunpowderDragonsAndSoup · 06/11/2007 11:53

Oooh, I don't want to ring it. It could be a loony on the other end!

Or what mishy said!

TripletEm · 06/11/2007 11:53

Sorry,it's been a very busy morning!!!

GunpowderDragonsAndSoup · 06/11/2007 11:55

I tried googling so I know the area (actually, I have a useful site bookmarked that tells you where area codes are for). It's difficult with phone numbers though as they are formatted in so many different ways.

The area is one where there's someone I don't like which is why I'm wary. It is far more likely to be telesales (or someone trying to book their Audi in for a service )

I remember this question arising before and I can't remember if anyone came up with a site or if it proved impossible.

There seem to be loads of sites offering to trace a mobile number but none for landline.

I'm not bothered enough to call it. It's just an interesting internet diversion

You could type the number in here and see if anyone else has been having nuisance calls from them.

SoupDragon · 07/11/2007 11:20

Ta Teejaye - not on their database though
