Anyone good at searching? Looking for statistics that are hard to find!! mental illness & homelessness.

Hiya!

Hopefully someone better at searching than me can help me out a bit!

I am doing a presentation on homeless people & mental illness. I have ,ost of it done, but now need the statistics for the opening paragraph.

Ideally I want the statistics for homeless alcoholics, substance abuse, schizophrenics & those suffering from anxiety. I never thought it would be this hard to find! Especially the % of alcoholics.

I don't have to concentrate on one place, eg: I have found there are 1,500 people homeless & suffering from anxiety in NI (found through the Simon community site). But I have also quoted statistics from Canada.

Anyone any good at finding info please? You'd be doing me a huge favour!

Oh SuperMonkey, thankyou SO much!

I had the Canadian one & the schizophrenia one, but none of the others, so thanks ever so much!

I will work in getting those incorporated in somewhere!

It's just a 2,5 minute presentation but I like having a pick of information

Thanks again

No problem at all! I do a lot of report writing for work so it's like second nature to me.

Hi fff2, i work for a homelessness charity. this may help. you don't say whether you are looking at street homeless people/ rough sleepers or those in hostels or temporary accommodation, the profile is different.

i'd say that most long term rough sleepers have some form of problem, usually undiagnosed. there are also issues around dual diagnosis becuase so many are substance misusers. from memory, i have seen figures ranging from 7% (diagnosed mental illness) to 80% (including personality disorder, depression and anxiety). so you can use whatever suits you really.

most services take a housing point of view rather than a health one (although of course they provide all the services around that), hence people may receive treatment and support but never get a proper diagnosis.

fireflyfairy2 · 28/10/2007 13:17

Hi squishie.

Our presentation topic is:

"Describe & discuss the evidence to support the existence of a link between homelessness & mental illness"

There are 5 of us in the group & I have the introduction to do. Ie: introducing the mental illness statistics etc & then my group will take a subject each & elaborate on it.

Ie: Anxiety, substance abuse, schizophrenia.

So I need to find out the % of people in various areas that suffer from these disorders.

My essay will also be on this, so the extra info I get can also be used in my assignment.

right, hmm it is difficult becuase of the lack of diagnosis and you are also into does mental illness cause homelessness or is it a result.

i've got to write something about this next week myself, when have you got to do it? if you click on that blue box on the link it gives you all the recent research. perhaps crisis report on health and homelessness, they are usually nice and quotable.

fireflyfairy2 · 28/10/2007 14:04

Hi, I have to do the presentation for next Monday, the 5th Nov.

I have to meet the rest of the girls from the group tomorrow which is why I wanted to get some stats down on paper.

My assignment isn't due in for a few weeks though. Thanks for the info squishie.

fireflyfairy2 · 28/10/2007 14:19

Of course I can Emma! Don't be going to any bother for me though, I'm sure you have enough work to be doing of your own!! Thanks though xo

Thankyou Emma, thankyou.

I am actually doing a journalism degree but the minor is in psychology. This term we are doing abnormal & clinical. I am going to save this page to my favourites!

I really appreciate you girls taking your time to help me, I don't feel very confident in the psychology area as I am just a minor student & they tend to design their course content around the straight psychology students.
