Haven't read the paper yet? What's the story?

Tinker · 28/09/2002 12:08

They had a 4 year affair before he was PM - around 1984. Uuughh, it makes me shudder just thinking about it!

Oh, my, god! That is too horrid for words! YUK YUK! I just can't bear the thought! Is it true or has she made it up to put it into one of her novels?

WideWebWitch · 28/09/2002 12:11

oh yuk yuk and double yuk. The grey one and the big nosed one, please don't put those pictures in my head... poor Norma though. I really wouldn't have thought he'd have had it in him IYKWIM

Deborahf · 28/09/2002 12:15

How come it counts as news? There must be other things happening more important than this!!! And as you say - yuk!!!!

Tinker · 28/09/2002 12:17

www - that was my thought. His reputation will probably go up in the eyes of some now!!!

ghosty - it was in her diaries apparently and he has issued a statement about fearing this would become public and it is the thing in his life about which he is most ashamed. The affair or it being Edwina???

Enid · 28/09/2002 12:46

The bit that made me laugh when I heard it on the news was his statement that it was the 'most shameful part of his life'.

bossykate · 28/09/2002 13:46

enid, you mean as opposed to the way he ran the country?!

i just could not believe this - would not have thought he was the "type" and with edwina! crumbs!

poor norma.

SoupDragon · 28/09/2002 14:09

Let's just be thankful there were no children as a result

SueDonim · 28/09/2002 14:59

When I logged onto the news and saw this story this morning my jaw nearly hit the floor!!! Apparently Norma did know about it, although I'm not sure whether she knew at the time. Thing is, did JM have any say in it? I mean, Edwina has rather a forceful personality and he mightn't have had the chance to say no. Makes you wonder about his Back To Basics policy, hehehe!!

PS Whenever I think about it, my mind blanks out. It's like thinking about your parents doing 'it'. They don't, as far as children are concerned!!

Bobbins · 28/09/2002 15:04

ewww....eugh

tigermoth · 28/09/2002 15:05

I always thought he was a bit of a goer under all that grey exterior.

It's always the quiet ones!

anais · 28/09/2002 21:37

My reaction was, and still is, "So what?" I can't believe they devoted so much time to it on the news. Must be a slow news day.

ionesmum · 28/09/2002 23:05

I think Edwina's a bit stinky putting this in her grubby little book. Don't feel sorry for him but I do for Norma.

I have read Edwina's novel " A Parliamentary Affair" hangs head in shame and now I feel violated as I am sure that the bonking scenes between the dymanic charismatic Elaine Stalker and her older, more career-orientated MP lover (name escapes me) are based on JM and EC's real life flings.

I will never eat strawberries again. And as for aerosol cream - forget it...

janh · 29/09/2002 16:52

It said on one news prog I saw last night that she was hurt - as anybody would be! - that he didn't mention her name in his autobiography - not even a tiny little reference to salmonella. I think, considering what a blabbermouth she is, she's done very well keeping it completely quiet for 18 years!

The very thought makes me shudder though.

bayleaf · 29/09/2002 18:48

What I can't get over is that they managed to keep it such a complete secret when it went on over FOUR years - how come NOBODY knew when they both led 'public' lives? Even the 'insiders' seem to be surprised by the news - wierd!

Marina · 29/09/2002 18:59

I wonder if the reason it made the news now is genuine baffledness on the part of the Westminster press corps. They genuinely never knew about this fragrant liaison at the time, and I gather that this is almost unheard-of.
I think it is wonderful, because it might finally stop my mother rattling on about what a lovely man JM is and how the Tories stitched him up. She has always loathed EC, so peace should reign from now on.
