don't check with the host - you will say "Shall I bring anything?" and she will say "Just yourselves"

It depends on the occasion - some flowers are always nice to take

Box of chocolates or some flowers will be fine

Unless you and your friends are really, really wealthy and the wine will be specifically chosen from the hosts cellar for the occasion, a bottle of wine and a bunch of flowers is best.
