On Sunday, I added the windows updates and since then, whenever I start up windows I get a security alert saying virus status is unknown and my pc could be at risk. I also get a funny red 'shield' with a white cross at the bottom of my desktop screen on the toolbar thingy down there.

I do have norton, it is up to date and subscription havs not run and and auto-protect is enabled......

ANy ideas???

yep they're after our cash!!!!

popsycal · 12/10/2004 11:13

aha - just got rid of it!!!!

double click on red shield - then chose service centre
when it says virus checked thingy - status unknown, click on recommendations then tick the box to say you will monitor it yourself

basically it seems that windows is monitoring your virus whatsit - it says it knows you have norton but doesnt know its status (can't be bothered to know perhaps)
the red shield has now gone

just got to check you norton whatsit yourself....

Hello everyone!
I too use windows XP, and since downloading service pack 2, i presume this is the update you are all talking about, my computer has NEVER been the same.
After much trawling through the internet, i found that LOTS of people have had lots of different problems since installing it.
If you trawl through this :www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?pg=2&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.perform_maintain&fltr=
(Sorry, can't do links,) You will see the different problems people are having, like there computer crashing, going VERY slow, problems with AV etc, etc.
TBH, there were so many problems i have ended up removing this update off my computer.
If anyone wants to know how to do that, let me know and i will tell you how to!

I have just restored my computer to saturaday and I loaded much faster afterwards.

Brill!!!
