I don't do martial arts but DS2 does karate. I think the problem with doing such an activity with your children is that they tend to have separate classes for adults and children. So you'd end up doing the activity but not in the same class.

I think there are some places that may do family classes. Perhaps you could look into that. Check with your local leisure centre or google it in your area.

Hi YG

If you want to do a martial arts class together you may have to wait a bit because most classes will not teach anyone under the age of 5.

A good web site to get an idea about the different styles is Martial Arts Planet

i used to do Tae Kwondo before i had DS and children could come to the classes too, there were a few families who did it...i think 3 might be a bit young though to be mixed with an adult group just because its a long time to concentrate.

Are you in York?? If so the classes i used to attend were just of the Mount. There is also some kiddy classes i know of in Leeds (but York side) where the teacher was v. good with the kids.

Ds and Dh are starting Tae kwan do. Apparently it is suitable for 3.5/4yrs up. They will be going to a class together.

This is a link for the classes in leeds that ive been too. The teacher Fiona was really good with the kids (and adults!), i used to go to the Scholes one sometimes.

tae kwondo

The friday one in lawnswood is mixed and that lad used to teach us in York sometimes, he's v. good also and as a bomus completely drop dead gorgeous!! (his girlfriend was lovely too mind!)

I would defo recommend the TAGB classes as they are less agressive than some forms of taekwondo, i was really nervous about it being v. male and macho when i first went but it was great, lots of women attend...i did it for 3 years before i got pg with ds and absolutely loved it, plus it will make you fit! I went back last year but then promptly got pg again so will no doubt be a few months before i restart again.

Ring and have a chat with the teachers if you have any Q's both were v. nice and approachable.

I'd recommend Tae Kwondo too. My DD1 goes to a TAGB one. The instructor is very good and the classes are mixed adults and children. The one she goes to does the first lesson free. They are encouraged to go for a while before buying the suit etc. They also do a 3 for 2 offer so quite a lot of parents join if they have more than one child there. I've certainly seen 5 year olds there but I think 3 might be too young - not sure.
