We got FIL a ballon flight for his 70th.My SIL's bought him tickets to see Shirley Bassey.

Are there any steam railways near where he lives? Our local one does lovely meals whilst on a trip through the countryside on a 1950's loco.

I find men always difficult to buy for never mind on a 'special' birthday.

When my dad was 70 my neice bought him a book about where he grew up - you know - they have all the old photographs in of how it used to be - he LOVED it -(wish I'd thought of it myself )!

My children gave their grandfather a book for him and my mother to fill in about their lives. A bit of an odd present, I suppose because the ultimate aim is that he will give it back to them, but I thought it was a nice idea at the time.

Food is my best tip if your FIL is even slightly interested. We visit the local deli and buy selections of spicy stuff in jars - FIL's personal fave - and then hamper it up ourselves. But nice jams/chutneys or even smoked salmon, pate etc would work.

Might be a bit late now but what about an album of photos of his life making sure there are pics of all the important people?

I did this for both my mum and dad for their 50th's and they loved them.

If you've not got enough for a whole album, what about just doing a collage in a frame with a few - did this for my Nan when she was in her late 70's.

OR, if you've got a lovely old photo of him (and perhaps his wife) you could have it enlarged and put it in a nice frame??
