should say on bottle... erm, I think a small glass is about 1 - how many small glasses in a bottle?

ja9 · 12/09/2007 20:58

aren't there 6 small glasses in a bottle?

VeniVidiVernonHartshornNUMNQV · 12/09/2007 20:58

Depends on the size of the bottle, and how strong it is, I guess.....one small glass is one unit - how many glasses can you get out of the bottle.

And, what is the real problem?

mammyjo · 12/09/2007 20:59

It depends on the alcohol content. I have a bottle of rose which is 13% and it says it is 9.8 units for the bottle. HTH

VeniVidiVernonHartshornNUMNQV · 12/09/2007 20:59

oh, DP says that it should say on the side of the bottle. [teetotaller]

Othersideofthechannel · 12/09/2007 20:59

I always thought it was 6 but may be wrong.

winestein · 12/09/2007 21:00

It depends on the alcohol content of the wine.

I have a 13% bottle here that says 1.7 units per 125ml glass. Divide that into 750mls and you get six glasses, multiply by 1.7 and you get just over 10 units.

Why?

onlyjoking9329 · 12/09/2007 21:00

Dunno, what's a small glass look like

HuwEdwards · 12/09/2007 21:01

The 6 units in a bottle of wine is based on wine thats about 8%. If stronger, it can be as much as 10 I think.

winestein · 12/09/2007 21:02

10.2 if you want me to get mathematical

iamnotstressed · 12/09/2007 21:03

dh is telling me that there is nothing wrong with drinking half a bottle every night, that he is under the 21 units limit, and i am telling him that i don't think it is good for his health to drink evey night and that he is over the limit. what do you think?

OP posts:
VeniVidiVernonHartshornNUMNQV · 12/09/2007 21:06

Well, there are several schools of thought on this one.

I think a glass of red wine an evening is supposed to have beneficial qualities.

Certainly binge drinking ie several bottles on each Friday and Saturday night is supposed to be Not Good.

I still think there are further issues underneath this....

Quootiepie · 12/09/2007 21:07

can he maybe drink lower alchohol wine? I think half bottle x 7 would be more than 21 units. Well, depends. That's a 3 unit a day limit...hmm...

LyraBelacqua · 12/09/2007 21:08

Not so long ago, it used to be that a small glass of wine, ie 125ml, was one unit.
Now the government say a 175ml glass of wine is two units. Makes no sense.
That's based on the wine being 12%.

winestein · 12/09/2007 21:08

Well, his maths is a bit out, but to be honest it doesn't sound that bad if he has half a bottle every night. That is just a couple of "home-sized" glasses and I wouldn't deny anyone that, personally

Kathyis6incheshigh · 12/09/2007 21:08

If it's 8% wine he'd be right, but it's almost certainly not.
I've been looking at the alcohol content of our wine since I had it pointed out to me about the increase in alcohol content, and it is hardly ever less than 12% - occasionally 11, but usually 13-4.
So he is probably drinking 5 units a night and is therefore well over the weekly limit.

iamnotstressed · 12/09/2007 21:09

i think it's too much for a 0 year old man...what about links to cancer in later life, liver damage, etc? dh thinks i am a killjoy.

There's another thread on this exact same subject here.

iamnotstressed · 12/09/2007 21:11

our wine is 12% normally. isn'it good for our livers to have some wine-free nights?

OP posts:
LyraBelacqua · 12/09/2007 21:13

Definitely a good idea to have booze-free nights. DP and I have at least two nights off each week, often more.

MaureenMLove · 12/09/2007 21:13

All I know is there was barely 2 units left in the bottle I'd earmarked for tonight and I've run out already!

iamnotstressed · 12/09/2007 21:16

Oh dear, i am gasping for a glass of wine now, thank you for your thoughts.

I've drank the best part of a bottle of red on my own tonight - a very unusual occurence, I might add. We are moving house on Friday and the packing and stress combined with DH sodding off to Wembley tonight gave me the perfect excuse to lounge on the sofa all evening and slurp my lovely Merlot. I feel no shame!
