Dog is having suspected phantom pregnancy and has just started chewing things and ripping the wallpaper again (did this when she was a pup), does anyone know if this is related to the phantom pregancy and how long must I put up with it for.

Thank you

Our cat had one of these and she made a 'nest' under our stairs and 'borrowed' my jumper and sat and wailed for about 2 days asif she was in labour. Had her spayed and she hasnt done it since.
No experience of dogs doing it though. Might be an idea to ring your vet for advice.sorry not much help.

Was going to ring the vet but then they will want to see her and then you are talking £20 consultation. Sounds mean I know but I thought if I could find out from any experts on here then I wouldnt have to fork out. Thanks

I take it your lady doggy has not been 'done'?

Tiggiwinkle · 27/08/2007 14:10

Our GSD has a phantom pregnancy after every season. She starts hiding in very small spaces, and also becomes quite grumpy! They do seem to behave oddly at this time. Usually lasts about 3 weeks and starts about 4-6 weeks after a season.

singyswife · 27/08/2007 14:55

HI, No she has not been 'done' as dh wants to give her a litter. Season ended 1 July, would this be right enough?? She started growling and snapping at other dogs and now the ripped wallpaper. Hope it goes away soon, she has been strange for over a week now.

when our dog had one when i was little my mum got her a kitten, have you tried a teddy?

not sure about the rest of the behaviour.

NutterlyUts · 27/08/2007 19:16

she's nesting. she'll start bringing toys in to "suckle" next

poppy34 · 27/08/2007 19:25

our dog used to have it but it stopped when she was spayed. It did stop after a week or two.

strangely never saw it in the two dogs we had after her (who we got as pups to keep each other company)- I wonder if it was fact that they had each other that seemed to some how stop this urge after they were in season.

NutterlyUts · 27/08/2007 19:28

I think the vet can prescribe galastop to calm her hormones

glucose · 27/08/2007 19:50

My mums dog was left 'un done' and did the whole under the bed with cuddly toys nesting thing, our dog was 'done' at 6 months and has not done this but was a pretty manic terrier until about 2y
sorry about your wall paper - had you re done it since she was a puppy and ripped it then??

singyswife · 28/08/2007 20:26

Hi, No she has never chewed the wall paper before. Fortunetely the hall needed done anyway but this is an extreme way to go about getting decorating done.
