Just heard on Five Live that the police are asking anyone around there to look out for a black Vauxhall Vectra, reg YT51 8JU. It may be still being driven but equally may have been dumped. Poor mother

That's just horrendous - can't imagine how distraught you'd be. Wonder how baby got left in car without mother though - perhaps it was stolen at a garage when she was getting petrol. Doesn't bear thinking about though does it

oh how terrible. What she must be going through

Hulababy · 29/09/2004 10:52

OMG! I am in Doncaster right now. That is so horrid. Will tell people in staff room this - break now - so if any re out and about in their frees they cankeep a look out.

carla · 29/09/2004 10:53

Phew - they've just found the car and baby appears to be well. Thanks Hula.

Fab news

So, how was the car taken? How come baby was in the car alone?

Hulababy · 29/09/2004 10:55

From BBC:

Car stolen with baby girl inside

A car with a three-month-old baby girl inside has been stolen from outside a house in South Yorkshire.
The black Vauxhall Vectra car was taken from Raby Road in Wheatley, Doncaster, on Wednesday morning.

It was seen driving away from the town towards Wheatley Hall Road with the baby on the back seat.

Police are urgently asking anyone who sees the car, registered YT51 HJU, to contact them by dialling the emergency services.

So looks like it was done outside their home. How horrid

NomDePlume · 29/09/2004 11:01

Eeek

Although I suspect that if anyone was daft enough to try and nick my car with 2 year old DD in the back, they'd only get as far as the top of the street, turn round and come back, they'd be so sick of her constant questions !

Kayleigh · 29/09/2004 11:05

Wow, that is scary. So glad she was found.

woodpops · 29/09/2004 11:40

That must have been the longest hour of that poor mothers life.

Update here

"She described how she had just parked the car with her daughter inside when she saw the thief drive off in it.

She gave chase and then alerted police, who immediately sprang into action."

Sounds like she was actually outside still near the car. OMG!

littlemissbossy · 29/09/2004 17:34

OMG, how terrifying... a lesson for everyone

iota · 29/09/2004 17:36

do people leave their keys in the car? I NEVER leave my keys in the car when I get out of it

Hulababy · 29/09/2004 17:39

I don't generally no. But I wonder if she didn't have central locking, put keys in car to open car doors, left in there to put baby in seat in car, and then that is when it happened? Or maybe put keys into engine first so warm car up?

CleanKittyCat · 03/10/2004 19:31

From our local news I heard that she had parked the car and left it running to put something in a letterbox and was only gone about 30 seconds. Don't know if its the truth haven't seen local press yet. Guess she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Luckily they left it about 2 streets away and the baby didn't even wake up.

Hulababy · 04/10/2004 08:24

It's been all over local papers and es, by all accounts, the woman was watching the car the whole time. But she could only see the baby - sisn't think to watch the drivers door. Can't imagine how horrid it is to watch your car driven off with baby inside, and being so close but unable to stop it.

I imagine the car thieves panicced when the saw/heard the baby. The street it was left on is very close to where it was taken from.

When ds1 was born I remember hearing on the news that a car had been stolen with a baby asleep in the back. They had subsequently dumped the baby - he was found, by a passer-by, crawling down an alleyway about two miles away. I remember being so upset by it - how could anyone abandon a baby like that? Anything could have happened to him - absolutely beggars belief.
