My son is going to primary school in January. I know that between now and then he might well grow but do you think it is worth getting his new stuff now as it is so much cheaper now as lots of people are buying it or wait until nearer the time.

Am only thinking a couple of shirts and a pair or two of trousers.

Am mainly concerned about budget as i am a single parent so not wealthy.

I don't think the prices go up really. The only thing that you probably won't get is the 3 for 2 offers that places like M&S & BHS are doing at the moment. TBH even with the offers Tesco would still be cheaper that either of those.

I did this last year cos I was concerned about availability in Dec/ Jan and actually that was ok then. Nowadays it seems to be sold all year round. I think if you see a bargain now get it but tesco etc do seem to sell it all the time at the same prices so you could wait.Def buy bigger sizes though cos they grow so quickly!!!

He is tall but he is still not in 4yr trousers yet. Didnt know if there is much difference between grey and black in term of washing.

I dont think the price changes that much there is usually better deals around after term starts

he might grow out of them very quickly if you buy now so it wouldnt save money anyway

jellyjelly · 12/08/2007 14:46

will he need things like pencil cases and things, i have oly just thought about that

no pencil cases etc needed at 4, school provides the lot.
maybe lunchbox or coolbag though, but they are easy to get any time of year.

jellyjelly · 12/08/2007 14:58

The only things we had to get for DTDs when they started reception were uniform & a PE bag.

I would look for a PE bag as we couldn't find one in Dec, and ended up paying £10 each for Bratz ones. I know tescos are doing some for £1-2.

Don't buy PE kit - ring school in Sept and ask if you can have a list of things they need. Our school use any shorts & Tshirt. Some parents had been out and brought black shorts and white T shirt unnessarily.

I think you can wait tbh.

This thread has made me realise I haven't thought about buying anything for DS for when he starts school in January . Am just presuming I'll get things nearer the time - probably the day before given my current putting things off status .

Kbear · 12/08/2007 15:46

If you're on a budget, it might be a good idea to buy a few bits over the next few months, or buy some Woolworths or Adams or M&S vouchers every month so you can shop in one go nearer the time. It can add up.

hennipenni · 12/08/2007 16:36

I really struggled with DDs uniform for a Jan school start, it was all christmas lines instead, couldn't get PE shorts for love nor money.

jellyjelly · 13/08/2007 15:07

i was thinking then

3 long sleeve shirts
2 trousers in black

He has socks and pants and the socks sweaters are labelled so i will have to buy them from there.

Got lunch box and drink container already.

ANything else i am missing?

I have bought for my dd1 who starts in January. I thought there was a greater choice this time of year and so went for it. It is easier with girls thought as the length is not so crucial for a skirt compared with trousers.
