How do I bleed a radiator?

Might seem a stupid question to some, but believe it or not, I've never done it! My first attempt this morning resulted in a soaked bath towel....that can't be right? Do I do it with heating on or off? Help!

Lou, are you having the whole system replaced?

Earlybird · 21/09/2004 11:59

Nope, no fan heaters. Will call plumber immediately as it's been 10 days now since he disabled the boiler. I know he's ordered the part. I'd be really stuck if it was dead of winter. Makes me angry as I just paid £250 in July for parts/labour on the silly boiler and it's still not right! Could have got a new one for circa £400.

Thanks for your help ladies. Looks like dd and I will be sleeping in jumpers until the boiler is fixed. Then, lets hope the radiators are functioning properly.

Yep, new rads, thermostatic controls on them, wireless thermostat system, new combi boiler.....

Just the final bits and pieces finishing off day today.

No heating for 14m, brrrr

If I were you I would buy some sort of small room heater then, Earlybird - we have a convector and a fan heater - you never know when you might need one, they're not expensive to buy and don't take up a huge amount of space - expensive to run though so use carefully!

JanH · 21/09/2004 12:02

And bollock plumber too!

lou33 · 21/09/2004 12:04

We bought a couple pf oil filled radiators to wheel from room to room last winter, which helped a bit.

Def give the plumber a kick up the arse.

Yamamoto · 21/09/2004 12:04

14 months, wow! Only asked becauuse old rads which are rusting kill combi pumps in a matter of months, but this is somethimg your plumber Knows!

lou33 · 21/09/2004 12:05

Ah no everything is brand spanking new. Cleanest part of my house

lou33 · 21/09/2004 12:06

Whole system was out of the ark, so no point trying to patch it up.

Earlybird · 21/09/2004 12:07

Thanks for the tip JanH - may make that a priority as dd called out at 3 AM because she was cold. Put a jumper on her, but couldn't manage to get back to sleep myself. Brought back memories of those new baby middle of the night feeds.

Wasn't it just a few short weeks ago that we were all in summer frocks?? And now we're talking heating.........

Plumber man says immersion is only for hot water, not rads. Boiler does heating, so you need to get your bloke hurried up.

Got to take ds to wheelchair fitting and physio now. Bbl if there is anythign else you want me to ask him
