NEW HENS!

Just brought my 2 new hens back - they are currently exploring their new run. Well. One of them is, the other is asleep on the edge of the dust bath(!). Hoping it's ok and we're not going to have a total poultry disaster!

The other two are shut in their house, much to their disgust, and once they're asleep, will let these two in. And set the alarm for EARLY to arbitrate!

The new ones are 2 Bovan Goldlines, they're very beautiful! As soon as dh has fixed his computer I PROMISE I will put some photos up.

TS, you are making me very envious

I've wanted hens for ages.

Ds and I watched the HFW programme and ds is desperate for hens now too. I will have to talk to my landlords first though and neighbours We have a big garden but it literally in the centre of a town and has a church and houses overlooking it on sides.

Love your pictures

Winnie - some houses have 'no poultry keeping' in the byelaws, but often it just means no noisy cockerel. Keeping a few hens is not much different to keeping rabbits or guinea pigs. But if you put the hen house next to a neighbours fence, make sure you clean it out regularly! (Makes great compost).

malorytowers

duchess, that is a good point. My house is quite old, it used to be a vicarage, and it is still owned by the church something tells me there are probably bylaws but I shall do some investigating

Malory - so have you just wrongly sexed some birds or are your boys having secret night-time visitors?

tortoiseSHELL · 18/07/2007 14:27

Love the blog.

Malory - DH reckons he read somewhere that chickens can change sex so you think they are roosters but actually they are hens (Personally I reckon he dreamt it - weirdo )
