Anyone ever had an Asbestos garage removed?

A house we are considering buying has an asbestos garage (fairly common apparently and no problem as long as not damaged) however we would want to remove it anyway. I believe you can do it yourself (with right equipment) but would rather pay external contractor - anyone any idea what this might cost?

Our old garage had an asbestos roof and we had to get the Council to come and take it away when we were knocking it down. Environmental Health deal with it I think. ASAIK its okay as long as its not damaged.

Dont know about getting it done proffesionally but Dh did it himself with a face mask and slegde hammer. Had to get special bags from council and then they will collect for free.

We were quoted £750 to have one removed in Loughborough, in 1999. WE did take it out ourselves, instead (VERY CAREFULLY). A friend has his taken out, and they just knocked it down quickly - up arose a giant cloud of dust... where do you think that landed except all over their garden???. That's partly why we chose to take it out ourselves.

so is it a fairly straighforward job to do it yourself?

A bit dodgy doing it yourself especially if there is a lot of asbestos. Do not break it up as that may cause the fibres to be released. Keep it damp if possible & wear a decent dust mask, gloves & I would get a pair of those paper overalls so they can be thrown away afterwards. The waste should be double bagged & taken away by an registered contractor. Or get a properly regsitered contractor to do it (they have to be licenced - your council should point you in the right direction).

It was easy enough for my Dh but obviously it needs to be done very carefully. He had to smash the roof up,so he wore a mask and did it very slowly. Wore gloves too and put it all in those bags.
