Sad, sad person ... but when is it safe to put out bird food?

I'd heard you shouldn't put out sunflower seeds at certain times of the year as the chicks might choke on them, but miss my little visits. Anyone know? TIA xx carla

i didn't know about that carla,my MIL is an expert,she has about 20 bird houses in her garden but i can't ask her as she's on holiday,i know she chops the fat from the bacon and puts it out for the birds,could you not crush the seeds a bit?sorry not much help
