What's the etiquette re tipping hairdressers?

When I lived in the US, it was a given that you tipped your hairdresser (a very healthy 15% or something ludicrous).

But I don't know what the rule of thumb is for hairdressers in the UK. Personally, it irritates me having to pay a tip on top of forking out a small fortune to get my hair cut. I mean, I do PR for clients and I charge them for the service and I don't expect a tip too.

But on the other hand, if it's the done thing to do, then I don't want to be mean. So a) are you supposed to tip your hairdresser and b) if so, how much?

thanks

I don't usually tip but I've recently changed hairdresser and it is so much cheaper that I felt guilty not leaving a tip last time & have decided I will in future! Not a percentage though, just a couple of pounds, it's all I can afford.

stressteddy · 15/07/2007 18:53

I put whatever I HAVE IN MY PURSE AT THE TIME - SOMETIMES 2/3 pounds. sometimes 5
It depends on how I'm feeling
I have also tipped nothing

Sorry caP LOCK ON!!!

elasticsortinghatstand · 15/07/2007 22:29

10%... unless it's for ds, and is a fiver, so £1, you cannot give 50p can you

Sparkletastic · 15/07/2007 22:30

Love my hairdresser so I give him a fiver because he makes me feel great on the rare occasions that I drag myself in to see him.

mazzystar · 15/07/2007 22:31

i tip at whim

if its a good cut
if its a crap cut but they have been really nice to me
or not

never ant toni and guy where it costs a bomb though they jsut have to make do with gratitude

I sometimes feel mean about not tipping our hairdresser who comes to our house. But she sets her prices and money is tight.

funnypeevesculiar · 15/07/2007 22:33

I've never tipped a hairdresser. Are you meant to?

Explains a few dodgy haircuts in the past

CountessDracula · 15/07/2007 22:34

i tip a fiver for a £45/50 haircut

IsabelWatchingItRainInMacondo · 15/07/2007 22:41

I only tip the junior ones. Since mine became a "senior stylist" and is "subletting" a chair, I don't tip unless I have the change on hand. They are meant to be earning more than the employed ones (As far as I'm aware the chairs are only sublet to highly proficient individuals who are so good the salon owner can't afford to pay them more).

I don't tip anyone. No-one tips me for doing my job.
