Quick question for all you techies? I know that my boss has on occasion read my emails - is there any way for me to tell if she is still doing it? ie is there an option where I can see the time that an email was last accessed? As I am part time I think she reads my emails when I am not in and then marks them as unread - I am now really careful about what I say on email and have warned all my friends etc. I would just like to know quite how much she doesn't trust me!

don they go form bold type to normal tyoe when opened?

krocket · 10/09/2004 13:53

yes but you can 'mark as unread' which turns them back to bold.
I'm pretty sure it will just tell you the time it arrived in your mail box

i dont klnow how office politics works but is htere any reason why she shouldnt be able to if they are ( supposedly ) work realted?
have you a n It policy?

oiseau · 10/09/2004 13:59

exactly - which is what I think she does apart from when they are from my old boss offering me my job back. Then she confronts me and bursts into tears ... nice.

no policy its tiny company. just want more ammunition as to why I am resigning when I do finally get round to doing it .... ie "can't work with someone who doesn't trust me, reads my emails etc"

Are you using lotus notes? If so, your IT dept can determine when an email was first opened, though they probably wouldn't tell you!!! Worth ringing and asking though! Once its marked as unread, you won't be able to tell she has read it though

The way the law is, your email address is a work facility, it belongs to the company in the same way that your computer, desk etc does and your manager is entitled to read your emails

WHY she is reading them is a different matter, if it is to ensure that work isn't being missed on your free days, fair enuf but if this is the case, you'd think she would have raised it with you at some point. If she thinks you are abusing the system, then yes, thats fair enuf

If however, she is just being plain nosey or is trying to cause problems for you, then I would discuss it with her manager, union rep, HR or someone

I often read my emails then mark them as unread if I haven't actually actioned the contents. When the email first arrives I have a little envelope icon appear in the bottom right hand side of my desktop, after the email has been read, and re-marked as unread the envelope icon disappears. Do you have this on your work pc?

You could try changing the permissions (right click on inbox and go to properties)
