Hi, any tips for good town/village to rent flat/house when I commute to Guildford and partner to London Liverpool Street? I would like to commute for less than hour.

I know about Surbiton and Wimbledon.

We are looking for rent 1300 per month max plus utilities etc.

Thanks

Have you considered the smaller towns in between such as Walton on Thames, Byfleet, Woking... I know most of those areas very well and have commuted to central London for many Years. Guildford is an easy commute from most stations along that Southern line.

I was going to say Surbiton - I commute into London and my husband to Hampshire, it was the only option that works for us time-wise.

Although friends live in West Byfleet and love it.

Thanks! How is he handling the commute? I would love to find something between that would work for both of us. I like Guildford but I cant ask my partner to commute so much :-/

Also how busy it is usually to London from Surbiton?

We’ve been doing it ten years now - it’s pretty fine!

I won’t lie, Surbiton to London is busy. I rarely get a seat between 7.30 and 8.30, but sometimes do after that. It’s very rare to not be able to get on a train, though.

(The upside is that it’s under 20 minutes so standing isn’t too bad...)

Plenty of people commute from Guildford et al into the City. It may well take as long from suburbia on a slow train.

I just want to find some way for both of us and Surbiton seems like the right location. How is housing there? I was checking some websites and found few flats but not many.

Hi Lenda, I’ve just PMed you - I think the local rental scene moves pretty quickly but more flats than houses within a 10-15 minute walk of the station. I’d register with a few and come and have a walk around the area as well to get the feel for various parts? Overall I find it safe (for an urban area) and friendly.
