A few days ago we had a burst pipe in the upstairs bathroom, its leaked and the there is quite a bit of damage, to make matters worst this was only decorated 8 months ago

Now I have both building and contents insurance, but I have never claimed off any insurance before and wouldn't know where to start, would it be the building or contents.
I just have a standard policy, so dont even know if the carpets I can claim for.

Any help would be appreciated

It should be both. The buildings to repair the burst and the contents for the replacement carpet. I would have thought you could claim for the carpets as it's accidental damage... but you'll have to contact your insurance company to see if your policy covers these things for sure. Good luck
