Elf and safety and other little gems such as this from Sobernow on another thread (hope she wont mind me cross thread quoting)

By Sobernow: I organise new, collaborative events among heritage sites. I think up the project, fundraise, co-ordinate and market it. It is enjoyable if a bit frustrating trying to get commitment and accurate information from participants.

What disappointed me was that I wanted to develop a virtual tour project, giving extended web access to the venues as both a marketing and an interpretation tool. But my boss just said: Never underestimate the power of a leaflet.

And another from my sister this morning (Sobernow, you know where my youngest sister works in Bath if you're reading this)

Her organisation has decided it's too dangerous to hang pictures in a stairwell because people might look at them and trip !

My dh's university department was told by Personnel they were not allowed to include 'good grasp of written English' as a job requirement for a new departmental secretary as it was discriminatory.

Against whom - people who would be able to do the job?!

WideWebWitch · 24/06/2007 20:47

lol Kathy. Mad, I tell you!

Sobernow's boss has a point; leaflets make much better firelighters than websites.

Whizzz · 24/06/2007 21:12

PARP
But can I just moderately defend my old career by saying its not necessarily faceless "Elf & Safety" thats always to blame, its the people who (badly) interpret the health & safety guidelines & regs

WideWebWitch · 24/06/2007 21:21

Oh come on Whizz, not putting pictures up in case someone LOOKs at them, that's barmy!

OP posts:
Kathyis6incheshigh · 24/06/2007 21:25

No, Whizzz is right - the HSE & HSC are actually pretty balanced, it's people who interpret their rules badly or use them to blame when they want to shut a facility etc that do all the really loony stuff.

I am involved with an organisation that campaigns for the right to swim in rivers, lakes etc and this talks about some of the stuff that has gone on in that area.

Whizzz · 24/06/2007 21:29

No sorry Wickedwaterwitch - it is a possibility that someone may trip on the stairs (with or without the pic hung in place) BUT it is the person who decided that putting up a pic wasn't worth the risk of the trip thats the problem I'm afraid

bogwobbit · 24/06/2007 21:31

The kids in ds's school used to regularly hold Cake and Candy stalls to raise money for charity. Now they are banned from bringing in home baking for 'health and safety' reasons. What a croc of s--t.
And as someone who works for the HSE it isn't us or health and safety legislation that's the problem is bampots that interpret it that are often the problem.
Not only is it over the top but it also takes attention away from 'real' health and safety issues and I speak as someone who is investigating their second fatal accident in less than a month.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 24/06/2007 21:34

Boo & hiss at them banning the cake stalls.

WideWebWitch · 25/06/2007 08:36

Well, I'm not having a go at H&S per se, I am having a go at barmy interpretations of it a la picture on stairs. But I certainly don't care enough to argue about it.

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 25/06/2007 08:37

you really can start a fight about absolutely anything on mumsnet can't you?

I AM NOT SAYING ALL HEALTH AND SAFETY LEGISLATION IS WRONG FGS!

www, maybe I'm missing something here but I thought that most of us were agreeing with you here - I certainly was. Why are you getting upset?
