Anyone know anything about Liverpool?

DH has been headhunted for a job in liverpool, he's miserable at work so it's tempting. We've been to the uni and city centre which seemed pretty grim so where is it nice to live? Which schools are good? Thanks!

Angharad
Just wondering if you arestill thinking of moving to Liverpool?

angharad · 18/09/2002 13:32

Things have got really complicated. Dh has had second thoughts about the move as he thinks he may want to get out of academia completely. Luckily they are being very patient! Today he's off visiting Glaxo in Harlow and has also applied for a job with another drug company in Edinburgh. Have to say that i'd got quite attached to the idea of moving to Liverpool and am completely opposed to any move to Essex (too near in-laws, and too far from my lovely family!) So in the mean time I'm trying to ignore it all. Thanks for all the advice though!

Hi guys, all change again nd it looks like a move north is likely. Have been doing a bit of browsing on the web but so any of you know Crosby/Formby/Thornton/Blundellsands at all? As city centre living is not an option we thought somewhere further out might be a bit more rural, or are these sprawling suburbs?

angharad, I went to school in Crosby, I actually lived in Southport, but a lot of my friends lived in the Crosby area. I think some parts are nice, quite affluent, and some are not so nice (sorry to say it seems to be not so nice as you move towards the city itself ).
It is a long time ago, so my memories are hazy, but the school I went to (Merchant Taylors) was (still is, I think) a v. good independent girls' school, and there's a boy's school, too. Not sure about state schools in the area, only remember that they used to lie in wait for us at the station and try to beat us up!
Have a look at this for more info on the area

emsiewill - hadn't realised you were a Southport girl. Merchant Taylor's - very posh

angharad - that neck of the woods is pretty nice, good access into Liverpool on the Dock Road, close to beaches. Is footballer territory - at least Ainsdale/Freshfields way is, but can be pricey.

Tinker, most people are amazed when I tell them I went to private school. I must just do a very good job of acting common

Thanks for the help, really quite stuck as this move will be long term so need to be in an area with decent schools, esp as DD has just started juniors. She's in an excellent state primary at the moment but will do the private thing if necessary! That said, we'd rather just have a nice house in an ok area...

I now live in Middlesex and would love to move back to the North West - am hoping husband gets made redundant so we can take up my ''plan''!! My mum's family comes from Liverpool but moved to their holiday home during WW2. Most of my grandparents family are still there.

If you don't want to live in Liverpool there are plenty of lovely places in the NW like Chester, N. Wales etc.

Hi, my dh has just got a lectureship at liverpool uni, although we've got friends from the area they've all been away too long to know much about where's nice etc.. So, could anyone tell me where to definitely avoid and where's ok? Also, I need to find a job so what's the employment situation? We'll be moving up in Dec/Jan.
