Does anyone have a computer they don't use any more?

My local school (total no. of pupils: 8) needs a replacement computer, but hasn't got a budget to replace the current one which is 9 years old! They are looking for a computer that runs Windows 98 and has at least 64 Mb (memory). Does anyone have an old one kicking about that they would be prepared to part with, or might there be old ones at work that are now redundant? We will pay postage costs obviously. Hope you can help.

Miaou, that is exactly the package we donated to dd and ds school when we bought the one we have now...they were very pleased...so unfortunately we cannot help you this time....I am sure there will be someone who will be able to

miaou, we have one which is younger than that, has Windows ME and at least 64 Mb - atm it is DS's for games but isn't really powerful enough (or something) and DH is trying to get him a slightly better one from work...might that do? It would be emptied and straightened out of course.

Would you need screen too?

JanH · 26/08/2004 18:57

Actually DH might be able to put something together at work come to that, they always have bits and pieces around...will ask him that too.

I have one sitting here I wish I could donate to the lovely lady from Muck, but afraid that the shipping would be far too unreasonable over the thousands of miles it would have to travel.

DelGirl · 26/08/2004 19:02

I've got one miaou but it is really old and would need an overhaul. Think it has millenium edition, cant remember. tbh, you can pick them up overhauled for near enough the cost of postage but youre welcome to it. It needs a new hard drive though

Miaou · 26/08/2004 19:04

oooh, wonderful JanH!

In terms of what we need, only the main unit is necessary as we can reuse keyboard, monitor etc from other pc. Having said that, if they were on offer we would accept them too!

Whereabouts are you? I've a feeling you're from South of England (a bit far away for us to collect!)

I'm in Lancs miaou, still a way from you, but we could send it by courier or something?

Miaou · 26/08/2004 19:10

DelGirl, thank you! That sounds great - DH is a computer techie type so putting in a new hard drive would not be a problem.

Do you want to contact me via cat. It is really in need of some tlc though just so you know.

DelGirl · 26/08/2004 19:13

I've got the monitor. keyboard/mouse, printer, and modem too if you need them?

Miaou · 26/08/2004 19:13

JanH, we are coming down to Yorkshire during the October half-term (sometime between 10th and 20th October-ish) - could we collect it from you??

Miaou · 26/08/2004 19:14

Will do DelGirl. Whereabouts are you?

DelGirl · 26/08/2004 19:14

oh and im in the far south too, can't get much further south if you tried

JanH · 26/08/2004 19:14

DG, can you really get an overhauled one for a pittance?

JanH · 26/08/2004 19:17

DG, my cousins had a short trip to your bit last week, thought it was totally blissful (they live in the Midlands so you can imagine!)

DelGirl · 26/08/2004 19:17

I think so Jan because I rang a shop near me to try and sell mine and he said you could get a whole package for under £100. That's not quite a pittance granted, but would come with a warrantee etc and less hassle. That's for the whole thing too.

DelGirl · 26/08/2004 19:19

it can be blissful Janh but diring to Beety;s made me wonder if I may move further out. Possibly as far as Italy one day bit the villages were idyllic

DelGirl · 26/08/2004 19:20

thats driving! . In fact, the isle of muck sounds appealing at the mo. My mum is staying on Iona at the mo and it looks wonderful. I think id need slightly more inhabitants than 36 though Miao

Miaou · 26/08/2004 19:20

Just remembered JanH, you said your ds was still using it ! Would not like to deprive him of it before you have a replacement!

If possible we would like to get hold of both (ie JanH and DG's) as they could use two in the school.

DG, the trick is to avoid falling out with anyone and keep all your rude comments for posting on Mumsnet!

Actually there is a place round here that recycles them - they take them away (you have to pay them for picking up) and they clean them up and make new ones or something. Must loook for website.

DelGirl · 26/08/2004 19:26

Where would you be without MN Miaou. It does sound lovely just think i'd need a few more people around. Unless of course I was shacked up with a beautiful man of course . Are there any free and single ones on Muck? I could bring the pc with me lol!

JanH · 26/08/2004 19:32

Miaou, if DH gets organised we could easily have something sorted by October; our half term starts on 22nd and we are going away that day, so as long as it's before then that would be fine.

He's out atm, I will talk to him about it when he gets back.
