I am moving from a village to a city and would like some suggestions for things to join/take up as I have been festering for too long

I would say film club/book group or some kind of course.

I am in a similar situation moving from rurality to a large town very close to big cities but I will be going the am-dram route!

Hello I guess you saw that HK are doing evening social sessions soon? My friend and neighbour plays cello in a small group in her flat in the evenings; I think they're quite good but I could ask her if she knows of anything similar if you like. There are lots of evening classes, many handy for you- two colleagues of mine did felting (non-knitted sort) and really enjoyed it. I'll keep thinking...

Pruni you are sooo right.

I would say for me

an art class (beginners drawing / life drawing) .. although it is internal rather than external so don't do this to make friends but rather to lose yourself for an hour or two

a dance class - look for something like ceroc (quick to pick up and normally doesn't attract geeks) ..you could go together or alone

a reading group or a 'knit and bitch' group

I think you may well find when ds starts nursery you will make lots of like-minded friends so leave room to build those types of relationships

I have just joined a gym and have been to pilates, gym, swimming so far .. luckily I don't actually want to socialise because getting fit isn't the place to meet people .. or maybe my red sweaty corpus is just a complete turn-off to social overtures
