Just called gas emergency line re: neighbour's BBQ...

Ever since our new neighbours moved in about a week ago I have kept thinking I smell gas. This morning we were in the garden and it was quite strong, so peeked over the fence and they have a rather old looking BBQ with 2 bottles of calor gas.

Have just called British Gas and they are sending somebody round.

I don't know anything about gas BBQ's - is it normal to have a funny smell? Not a great way to meet your neighbours...

don't know what calor gas smells like - but you've done the right thing

LIZS · 04/06/2007 14:11

Soundn like they have left it on or not shut off the valve. Eventually it will empty itself. Bit ott to call BG imho , are they in or could you enter their garden to shut it off perhaps ?

WigWamBam · 04/06/2007 14:12

Gas BBQs often smell when they're in use, but they shouldn't smell when they're not. You've done exactly the right thing.

They aren't in and neither are any of my other neighbours so would have to climb over fence to turn off (which I have no idea how to do) leaving 3 year old and baby to their own devices.

Is it safe to empty Calor gas into your garden then?

shouldn't think so

LIZS · 04/06/2007 14:37

Fair enough . They don't hold that much really but are pressurised , assuming it is one of the regular blue cannisters, and it is in open air presumably. I'd be surprised if there were much left if it has been leaking for a week or so . Agree it is not ideal but not as dangerous as an actual gas leak indoors or from a main.

Well thats reassuring LIZS. Am expecting people in white suits and protective head gear to ring the door bell any minute now. Would be ironic if we had to stay in all afternoon waiting for gas man next to the BBQ of terror.

They had left a burner on. Gas man complemented me on my vigilance. Is this what it feels like to be a Brownie or a Scout?

well done - have a good neighbour badge !

RedtartanLass · 04/06/2007 16:07

oh good for you , has the Gas Man left a big "Do not USe" sticker on it? What a way to meet your new neighbours
