DP has just cancelled our hols for the bank holiday week - we were supposed to be going to northern spain for the week but after much consideration he has decided that if BA strike he doesn't want me sitting around in an airport for 24 hours and 6 months pregnant and apparently although it hasn't been reported in the GB press too much that there has been numerous bombs and rioting courtesy of Eta in the area that we were meant to visit!! DP did say that Eta are nice terrorists and would have told everyone that there was a bomb about but he really did not want either of us to be worried and he was worried about me not being able to run in the face of a bomb blast!!

Am sad in a way that we won;t get to see the beautiful place we booked to stay at but feel quite relieved that I won't have to struggle to the airport or be hot for another week!!

We are now going to Somerset/Devon for a week - somewhere called Porlock apparently for 4 days instead - so if anyone knows somewhere nice for us to visit in that neck of the woods please say - and I won't be doing huge amounts of walking so no lovely walks through country parks please!!

Porlock has a very steep hill. Porlock hill, oddly enough! My parents have friends who live in Minehead whish is in that area.

Hi Twinkie,
I hope you thoroughly enjoy your holiday. DP sounds very caring It's so annoying though when airlines and such like strike at the holiday time

Chandra · 19/08/2004 11:03

Sorry to hear that Twinkie, hope you have a nice time in this other place. I don't know the area but if I were you I would be tempted to spend a nice day in a spa making up for the disapointment (for example a very good and soft massage lasting for an hour, a facial, etc.

PS:ETA nice terrorists? you may change your mind if you know that most of their victims are children (who usually find and touch the explosive bags ).

Porlock weir very beautiful, loads of quaint tearooms selling yummy cream teas. Also near are Lynmouth/Lynton - very very steep but I think they have a funicular than carries you up the hill and its all very pretty...

But I have to say...pack your wellies (from a Dorset/Somerset border lass)...sorry

sassy · 19/08/2004 11:47

Lynton and Lymnouth are just over the top of POrlock hill, headin west. Pretty village, with the usual touristy things like mini-golf, cream teas etc. We enjoyed a make your own pot session at one of the galleries - but you may need to book this ahead.
Sorry about your cancelled trip - hope this is a good substitute!

Steepest hill I have ever driven up. Had me terriifed that we would stall and roll all the way down . Nice village iirc, pretty area.

sassy · 19/08/2004 12:23

Meant to say - watch your brakes on the hill down into Lynmouth! There are several escape lanes needed by people who have run out of brake due to sitting on them all the way down. Best thing is to use them in short, sharp bursts - and pray!!

Twinkie · 19/08/2004 12:28

Thanks all - am looking forward to it a bit more now - wasn't lynmouth one of the villages that was washed into the sea years ago and they blamed it on some sort of rain making experiment??

Will be hugely fat by the time I come back with all the cream teas and will warn DP about the hill - mind you after driving from Naples to the Amalfi coast last week I can;t imagine any sort of hill will be too much trouble - at least we won't have mad italians driving towards us on the wrong side of the road with a 200 foot drop into the sea on the other side!!

Chandra - my god I didn't know much about Eta - in my view all terrorists are awful so what DP said didn't cut much but I am glad I am not going there now. Silly but I know nothing of whatthey are fighting for but to me nothing is worth planting a bomb for, especially one where chldren are the ones that get hurt!!

It's something like 1 in 2 isn't it?

lou33 · 19/08/2004 12:55

Sorry, 1 in 4.

lou33 · 19/08/2004 12:57

Look here!

wellsie · 19/08/2004 13:18

Twinkie, yes it was either Lynton or Lymouth that had a mud slide (i think) it was about 50yrs ago and there's a museum to explain more.
DH and I stayed here last summer, very pretty but like everyone has said Porlock hill is pretty steep and going in around Lynton & Lymouth you'll encounter more hills!

I'm sorry you had to cancel your holiday, any chance you could get another break away before babe arrives. I would do it if I was you - I'm really missing my holiday abraod this year

suedonim · 19/08/2004 14:44

Sorry about your holiday in Spain, Twinkie but lucky you going to Porlock! It's just gorgeous round Exmoor - it's where we went on honeymoon. Porlock Hill is marvellous - dh used to drive up it then turn round, go back and do it again, it was so much fun. But do not get stuck behind a car towing a caravan up the hill as you'll be there till Xmas, I guarantee.

Lynton/Lynmouth are quaint and indeed there is a little funicular linking the two. The towns on Exmoor are pretty and it's Lorna Doone country as well. There are feral goats nearby at ?Rocky Bay? and the National Trust village near Porlock/Minehead is exquisite, all thatched roofs etc. Oh, I'm so jealous, it's years since we've been to Exmoor.
